WWE Main Event Results
August 5, 2014
Laredo, Tex.
Aired on WWE Network
Report by James Caldwell, PWTorch assistant editor

Main Event opened with Alberto Del Rio coming to the ring waving a Mexican flag since they're close to Mexico in very South Texas. On commentary, Tom Phillips noted the connection. In the ring, Del Rio said he's going to speak to his countrymen in Spanish. Del Rio fired up the crowd, then himself by reminding himself that he's Alberto Del Rio.

Del Rio thanked the crowd for their support through the years, then the Real American theme played to bring out Jack Swagger and Zeb Colter. Swagger was holding his American flag to answer Del Rio's Mexican flag.

In the ring, Zeb Colter said he didn't understand a word Del Rio said. Apparently Zeb is back to playing the heel role tonight. He said where he comes from, they don't speak Spanish, Spanglish, or Mexican. He said he might as well be in Mexico. Or even Russia. Zeb said he doesn't want to make anyone mad, as he's just pointing out the obvious.

Del Rio said they are not in Russia, but right on the border between the U.S. and Mexican border. He said he can't think of a better place to have a fight with Zeb's little perrito, Jack Swagger, than right here in Laredo, Tejas. Zeb said he accepts, then told Del Rio that he will be like Rusev Crush for Swagger tonight. Zeb asked all the Real Americans in the building to please rise and declare "We The People." Swagger's music played to end the segment as Phillips and Byron Saxton discussed Spanish vs. Tex-Mex.

Still to come: A.J. Lee returns to Main Event.

[Break]

Raw last night: Dean Ambrose cost Seth Rollins his Beat the Clock Challenge match against Seth Rollins.

In-ring: Slater was standing by with Titus O'Neil. Slater said they people love their team - Slater Gator. Suddenly, Goldust and Cody Rhodes's music interrupted to bring out Goldust, followed by Stardust, who was introduced by his wife, Eden Stiles.

1 -- GOLDUST & STARDUST vs. TITUS O'NEIL & HEATH SLATER

Naturally, strange antics from the Rhodes Bros. early on. Titus dominated Stardust early on, then brought in Slater for a follow-up attack. Stardust broke free, then tagged in Goldust, who ran over Slater with clotheslines, then dropped down for an uppercut. "C'mon!" Goldust shouted. Snap powerslam for a two count, then Cody ran off Goldust's back to attack Titus. In the chaos, Titus threw a boot toward Goldust, which allowed Slater to roll up Goldust for the win. Cue up an awkward celebration between Slater and Titus. Very awkward.

WINNERS: Slater Gator at 4:01. Is this another one of those week-long deals where WWE gets interested in fill-in-the-blank mid-carder on a Monday and Tuesday, then drops the deal the following week?

Raw Rebound: Brie Bella vs. Stephanie McMahon contract signing. The video package tried to clean up the messy elements of their promo exchange, but still kept in the tear-down speeches.

[Break]

In-ring: Summer Rae was introduced to the ring for match action. Divas champion A.J. Lee was out next to face another babyface in the Divas division.

2 -- Divas champion A.J. LEE vs. SUMMER RAE -- non-title match

Summer, who has been playing a face for weeks post-Fandango, played the heel early on by aggressively attacking Lee. Lee then took a blow to the head and sold neck pain from the whiplash injury angle last week. Summer heelishly capitalized, but became overly-aggressive, allowing A.J. to slap on Black Widow to get the win moments later.

WINNER: A.J. via submission at 2:05. There's just no consistency to these characters. Inevitably, Summer will be back to a face role taunting Fandango next week on TV.

Post-match: Tom Phillips entered the ring to interview A.J. Lee. A.J. offered a fairytale about an evil witch stealing the throne from her, then she became her own white knight re-taking the Divas Title and ruining Paige's story. Suddenly, Paige's music interrupted to bring out A.J.'s Summerslam opponent on-stage. Paige said she can be A.J.'s white knight because they belong in the ring together, she respects her, and she loves her as frenemies. Paige said this is a great story. Back in the ring, A.J. said she likes Paige's style, but she won't like how this story ends. A.J. told her little crumpet that this is her kingdom. Cue up A.J.'s music for the final word.

Still to come: Swagger vs. Del Rio.

[Break]

Video Package: John Cena vs. Brock Lesnar from Raw. Blood, urine, and vomit, too.

In-ring: Jack Swagger was introduced to the ring with Zeb Colter for the main event. Swagger was sporting taped ribs underneath his singlet, apparently to sell the effects of Rusev's attack last night on Raw.

[Break]

3 -- JACK SWAGGER (w/Zeb Colter) vs. ALBERTO DEL RIO

Big smile from Del Rio when the bell sounded, then the two men locked up center-ring. Swagger initially got the best of Del Rio, but Del Rio fired back with successive offense. Swagger decided to bail from the ring, which made it seem like he was ducking a fight, drawing some boos. Back in the ring, Del Rio targeted the injured ribs, but Swagger turned it around with knees to Del Rio's gut. Swagger then dumped Del Rio over the top rope to the floor.

On the outside, Swagger blasted Del Rio into the barricade, then rolled him back into the ring. But, Swagger took too long, allowing Del Rio to pop him in the side of the head. Swagger sold the effects heading to break.

[Break]

Swagger and Del Rio traded blows wearing each other down to continue a very physical match. Del Rio suddenly slapped on the cross arm-breaker in the ropes to apply more pressure to Swagger. Del Rio then climbed to the top, but Swagger cut him off. Swagger to the top, where he delivered a superplex that injured both men. Swagger shook off the ribs pain and covered, but Del Rio kicked out.

Swagger to his feet for a big knock-down clothesline. Running Swaggerbomb scored a very close two count. The crowd started to rally behind Del Rio, who fought back with forearm strikes. Then, a Tornado DDT for a nearfall of his own. Swagger responded with a takedown, but Del Rio rolled a shoulder just before three. Del Rio responded with a backbreaker, then nailed a standing sidekick for another two count.

At 11:00, Del Rio slapped on the cross arm-breaker center-ring. Swagger tried to break the hold as he sold pain from Del Rio's match-long attack. Swagger not only broke free, but rolled into the Patriot Lock, but Del Rio broke free. Patriot Lock again. Del Rio reached for the bottom rope, but was forced to tap out, giving Swagger a big win heading into Summerslam against Rusev.

WINNER: Swagger via submission at 12:08. Really good TV (or Network) match. Del Rio was inspired, Swagger has rediscovered his purpose on WWETV, and this felt like a real competition with a decisive winner and loser that could have gone either way. Nicely done.
