WWE Superstars TV Results
September 2, 2010 - Year 2, Week 21
Taped the Week of August 30
Report by James Caldwell, PWTorch assistant editor

This week's episode of WWE Superstars on WGN opened with pyro shooting off and Raw announcers Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler introducing the show. Cole noted it's been an "historic week" in WWE with Raw #900 on Monday. Tonight's main event is Kofi Kingston vs. Chavo Guerrero, from the Smackdown brand.

In-ring: Ted DiBiase's music kicked off the in-ring proceedings, bringing out DiBiase with Maryse for the opening match. Goldust then came out as Cole noted Goldust providing "so many memories on Monday nights" as "one of the most bizarre Superstars" in WWE history. It's a battle of the DiBiase and Rhodes families to start the show.

1 -- GOLDUST vs. TED DIBIASE (w/Maryse)

The bell sounded and Goldust stared at DiBiase before locking up. After an opening exchange, they moved to the floor where Goldust rammed DiBiase into the post. Goldust rolled DiBiase back into the ring. Suddenly, the camera operator found Maryse to his liking and focused on Maryse before swinging around to an on-camera for Cole and Lawler after Maryse shocked Cole by looking his way. Back in the ring, Goldust controlled the match before knocking DiBiase to the outside again. Maryse checked on her man, then Goldust followed with a right hand on DiBiase. Goldust whipped DiBiase into the guardrail before sending him back into the ring. Maryse then grabbed Goldust's foot to cut him off and give DiBiase an opening to whip Goldust into the ring steps. And, suddenly, according to Cole, DiBiase was "rolling" less than 20 seconds after being deemed "unable to get off the blocks" when Goldust was in control. Cut to break.

[Commercial Break. Hulk Hogan and Troy Aikman on a new set promoting a new HD TV for rent. Aikman asked Hogan if he knows anything about football, prompting Hogan to self-deprecate "three strikes and you're out." Good times.]

Back from break, DiBiase was in control working on Goldust. They picked up an obligatory camera shot of Maryse ringside before showing DiBiase score a close nearfall following a clothesline. Goldust teased a comeback, but DiBiase cut him off with a backbreaker across his knee for a two count. Maryse had a word to share with Cole and/or Lawler as DiBiase continued to work on Goldust. DiBiase landed fist drop after fist drop as Maryse sold enjoyment with each strike. The randomness of this match prompted Cole to note his dream was to guest star on The Love Boat and Lawler said he had a dream he went to school naked.

The "bizarre one" Goldust made a comeback with the trademark uppercut and atomic drop before landing an old-school bulldog for a close two count. Goldust then took DiBiase to the corner and landed four out of ten punches before dropping DiBiase with a powerslam coming out of the corner. Goldust then fired up the crowd to take it home, but walked into a face-first plant for a two count. Goldust came back with a boot to the head and tried to finish him, but DiBiase countered into a slingshot suplex across the top rope, followed by a big boot. DiBiase then capitalized with Dream Street for the pin and the win. And Maryse can finally celebrate DiBiase winning something.

WINNER: DiBiase in 13:00. Stand-out TV match from DiBiase and Goldust, who continues to look solid in the ring auditioning for quality TV time on Monday nights. (**)

[Q2]

NXT recap: They went back to Tuesday's NXT, marching through the progressions of the triple threat match, Alex Riley's elimination, and Kaval and Hennig's back-and-forth promos. They included some old-school Low-Ki footage of his "13 year journey" to WWE. Nice. They showed Kaval winning NXT Season Two, setting off his celebration. Interestingly, they did not show his celebration being cut short by the other Season Two Rookies attacking him. Back on the air, Cole noted Season Three with all-Divas begins next Tuesday.

[Commercial Break. Hogan and Aikman again.]

In-ring: Santino Marella came out with Kozlov for Raw's second contribution to the show. Cole casually introduced a "fact" that Santino and Kozlov are undefeated since forming a team. The Usos them came out, including Tamina, who is smitten with Santino. Jimmy Uso has the assignment tonight.

2 -- JIMMY USO (w/Jey Uso and Tamina) vs. SANTINO MARELLA (w/Kozlov)

Cole spread "locker room gossip" that the Usos aren't pleased with Tamina gravitating toward Santino. The match started with Santino doing comedy teasing offense that Jimmy easily side-stepped. Santino tried a drop toe hold, but Jimmy just stood there. They locked up and Santino busted out a take-over. He celebrated, then walked into a kick to the gut from Jimmy. Jimmy capitalized by going on the offensive, but missed with a corner headbutt. Santino then landed right hand strikes, did the splits, and dropped Jimmy with a hip toss. Santino got fired up and delivered the Sailor's Salute dive for a two count. Jimmy then tried to come back with a top-rope Superfly Splash, but Santino got his knees up to block. Santino followed up with the pin for the win.

Post-match: Tamina checked on her boys, but then slowly walked over to Santino. She took off her lei and put it around Santino's neck. Lawler asked Cole to describe what just happened. Tamina then grabbed Santino's "Cobra" and gave it a squeeze. She smiled at Santino and left the ring for Santino to celebrate with Kozlov. Cole said if you haven't had enough yet, it's Kofi vs. Chavo still to come in the main event.

WINNER: Santino in 4:00. Light comedy fare continuing to play up Tamina appearing to be smitten with Santino. Unless this plays out for weeks not going anywhere, it will turn into a trap or it will lead to Tamina joining the international tandem and dumping the Usos. (*)

[Q3]

[Commercial Break. More Hogan & Aikman.]

Announcers: Smackdown's Todd Grisham and Matt Striker introduced a WWE website feature on Raw #900. They fed to the weekly Superstars profile video, this time on WWE champion Sheamus getting over his dominance, and destruction, and, of course, taking out Triple H. Back to the announcers, they fed to a video package on WWE's trip to China last weekend.

In-ring: Kofi Kingston came out for the TV main event with 22 minutes to go. Kofi got his full ring intro before they cut to a break.

Raw plug: Before the break, they aired a video package putting Nexus in the same category as other top stars from 900 episodes of Raw. "But, there's never been a group like Nexus." The voice-over man ominously said this Monday on Labor Day, the Nexus comes to Washington, D.C. Apparently they're going to hold a rally.

[Commercial Break]

Arena: Striker plugged Night of Champions as WWE's "next big event" as Kofi's music continued to play. Chavo Guerrero then came out to face Kofi. Striker noted Chavo is a "third generation star," befitting on the theme tonight following DiBiase, Goldust, the Usos, and Tamina.

[Q4]

3 -- KOFI KINGSTON vs. CHAVO GUERRERO

Striker and Grisham discussed Kingston needing this win to get back in the IC Title hunt ahead of Night of Champions. Early on, Kofi landed a flying cross-body block from the second rope for a two count. Kofi then went to work on the mat, trying to wear down Chavo. Kofi focused on Chavo's left knee, then Chavo came back with stomps and kicks with his good foot to work over Kofi. Chavo tried to threow Kofi through the ropes to the floor, but Kofi rebounded off the ropes and flung Chavo to the outside. On the outside, Kofi teased a high-flying attack, but Chavo yanked him off his feet stomach-first onto the ring apron. They cut to break with both men selling on the floor.

[Commercial Break]

Back from break, Chavo took control of the match wrapping Kofi's leg around the ringpost. Chavo continued to sell Kofi's work on his leg as he went on the offensive. Kofi fought back with right hands, sending Chavo reeling to the opposite corner. Kofi blasted Chavo with more rapid-fire blows, but Chavo came back with a rolling kick to the head for a two count. Nice sequence. Chavo resumed control of the match and played to the crowd as the announcers debated who will be deemed #1 contender for the IC Title at Night of Champions. Kofi came back with an elbow to the head, then a neckbreaker. Both men sold, then came to their feet and Kofi won the exchange with a dropkick. Kofi followed with his sweeping drop into a pin, but Chavo grabbed the ropes for a break.

At 10:00, Kofi followed with a boot to the face, then hobbled around the ring to set up the Boom Drop. Kofi then went to the corner for his hand-clap to set up the Trouble in Paradise, but Chavo avoided the move. Kofi tried to follow with a top rope splash, but Chavo fell onto his back to block with knees to the gut. Nice sequence. Chavo scored a nearfall, then followed with all three of the amigos suplexes. Chavo sold the leg again, then teased going up top. He took too much time, allowing Kofi to crotch him. Kofi followed up top with a superplex attempt, but Chavo blocked and knocked him to the mat. Kofi suddenly sprung to life again and nailed Chavo with Trouble in Paradise as Chavo was perched up top. Chavo fell off the top to the mat and Kofi made the cover for the win. After a replay of the high points from the match, they closed with Kofi celebrating and the announcers plugging Smackdown on Friday.

WINNER: Kingston in 14:00. Another stand-out TV match on this show. Good wrestling content this week. Chavo was impressive given time in the ring and Kofi played a strong babyface "working through the pain" to pull out the win. (**1/2)
