Smackdown got off to a good start this week with Chris Jericho coming to the ring to complain about losing the Royal Rumble match. As usual, Jericho gave a good promo. It was nice to hear him talk about his plan to headline WrestleMania being in place since last year's show. That helps underscore the importance of this one night. His march through the back looking for Teddy Long's office was humorous. His brief verbal exchange with Edge worked well to set up their eventual match and to preview the Cutting Edge for later in the show.

This seemed like a case where two mid card wrestlers got a chance to have a 13 minute match and decided that this was their opportunity to steal the show. Carlito and Evan Bourne had a great match. It was better than any match on Raw so it likely did steal the show at the Raw taping. It has been the best match of the week so far in WWE with a good chance of keeping that title. This is the most offense that we've seen from Bourne in a long time and it was a good reminder that he can do more than just a few really impressive high flying moves. I love his leaping kick and knee strikes. Carlito looked rejuvenated. These guys usually get only a short match on Raw to try to fit in their signature spots and tell a story. In this longer match, they weren't rushed. They were able to go back and forth and spread their spots out in the context of a real match.

Overall: I very much enjoyed this show. There were several really well contested matches, most notably of course Styles-Dinero. Joe I thought took another step to reestablishing his sorely missed bad-assness, Foley and Bischoff were mic gold, and Nash was great. Everything was cruising nicely until the main event—if you're going to have a two-minute main event match, it had best have some really cool angle. Otherwise there's really not much point. I was just settling in when the match ended. Clearly it was designed just to get the post match wackiness, but was there really no other way to get Kevin Nash out into the ring? Also, I think the emphasis on Hall and Pac's craziness might have taken away from the zing of the turn—why not expect a turn from people you've already told us are crazy? Hall randomly attacked a fan at the PPV—that makes him attacking Nash slightly less shocking. I think as an angle it has plenty of possibilities. They can have a little mystery regarding who's giving them orders, with then maybe a big reveal of someone not Bischoff (or else a really good fake to someone else before the inevitable Bischoff reveal). But as a show ending segment, it was just bit lacking. With really only the main event weighing this show down, it still might be worth an A-.

This is going to be the week of marginal Hits for ECW. While only one thing stood out as a Miss this week (more later), and while there were some moments that were just ok (like The Abraham Washington Show), there were three matches that were all good, but not that good. So, they are all marginal Hits starting with Shelton Benjamin vs. Vance Archer. Benjamin looked particularly good in this match with his aggressive style early on and some of his high flying spots. Archer looked solid in the ring. He just isn't anything special. What took the match down a peg was the botched ending. Clearly, Archer was supposed to get the win by countering Benjamin's roll up and grabbing the ropes for leverage. They blew that spot and had to go with a different type of leverage pin right away. It was awkward, but it was still a good match until that point.

Raw got off to a good start with the opening segment with Edge and Sheamus. Edge was good on the mic in his first promo since returning from injury. He did a nice job explaining his mind set going into the Royal Rumble with what sparked his desire to defy the doctors and come back from as soon as possible. He played up his possible feud against Chris Jericho. He teased matches against both Sheamus and The Undertaker for WrestleMania's main event. I wish he had brought up Christian, but I guess ECW is never going to be on the radar for these situations. Sheamus was good in his performance as well. Edge got a mixed reaction at first with a lot of boos, but his physicality against Sheamus pushed him to a babyface reaction. It will be interesting to see going forward with his Cutting Edge on Smackdown with guest Undertaker how his character is presented. Will he be a babyface or heel? Or more of a tweener (which would get my vote at least for now)?
