RADICAN'S WWE REVIEW SERIES
"BROTHERS OF DESTRUCTION: GREATEST MATCHES"
RELEASED BY WWE IN 2014

This release will be available in stores on Oct. 7, 2014

Smackdown, April 19, 2001

(1) WWE Tag Team Champions Christian & Edge (w/Rhino) vs. The Brothers of Destruction (Undertaker & Kane) in a No DQ match. Undertaker was doing the American Badass gimmick during this period. Edge, Christian, and Rhino start the match by jumping Kane while Undertaker was still riding his bike around the ring, which made for a funny visual. Kane came into the match selling an arm injury. Rhino interfered at one point and hit the fire on Kane. Undertaker finally got the hot tag and ran wild. Austin and Triple H ran down and attacked Kane on the outside. Taker won the match with the last ride on Christian.

After the match, Austin and Triple H attacked Undertaker, but Kane made the save.

Winners: Undertaker & Kane to become the new WWE Tag Team Champions.

Star rating: (**1/2) - This was a solid match that showed the ability of Undertaker & Kane to beat multiple men interfering and their opponents to capture tag team gold, although the match seemed designed to set up Undertaker & Kane vs. Triple H & Austin.

Raw, July 30, 2001

(2) The Dudley Boys (D-Von & Bubba Ray Dudley) vs. The Brothers of Destruction (Undertaker & Kane w/Sara) in a Tables match. Undertaker had the match won very quickly with a choke slam on D-Von, but The Alliance ref Nick Patrick moved the table. DDP ran down and hit a low blow on Undertaker and grabbed Sara. Bubba went for a powerbomb off the turnbuckles through a table on Sara, but Undertaker and Kane made the save. Undertaker them choke slammed Bubba through the table for the win.

Winners: Undertaker & Kane - Not much of a match, but it did bring back fond memories of DDP's stalker gimmick.

Smackdown, Aug. 9, 2001

(3) WCW Tag Team Champions Chuck Palumbo & Sean O'Haire vs. The Brothers of Destruction (Undertaker & Kane w/Sara). O'Haire nailed Taker with a chair shot on the outside behind the ref's back, but he quickly fired back a short time later with a big DDT in Palumbo. Kane got the tag and ran wild on Palumbo and O'Haire. Kane wet for a double choke slam, but O'Haire and Palumbo blocked it. They went for a double suplex on Kane, but Taker broke it up and The Brothers of Destruction hit a double choke slam for the double pin win.

Winners: Undertaker & Kane to become the new WCW Tag Team champions - this was short and mostly one-sided to set up Taker & Kane vs. DDP & Kanyon in a Cage match to unify the WCW and WWE tag straps.

Summer is always a good time to get revenge on DDP for stalking your wife.

SummerSlam, Aug. 19, 2001

(4) WWE Tag Team Champions DDP & Kanyon vs. The Brothers of Destruction (Undertaker & Kane w/Sara) in a Steel Cage Title Unification match. Kanyon & Page looked scared as Taker and Kane made their entrance. DDP and Kanyon tried to climb out of the cafe as soon as the bell rang, but that strategy wasn't successful. The fans really fired up after Taker nailed DDP with a big boot while he was trapped between the ropes and the cage. Kanyon hit a spear on Taker and then a face buster on Kane. DDP then hit a DDT in Taker. They tried to climb out of the cage again, but got cut off. Taker told Kane to let Kanyon escape. They isolated Page inside the ring. They had DDP pinned, but Taker lifted his head up to get further revenge in DDP for stalking Sara. Taker wrapped a chain around DDPs throat before using it to toss him into the cage. Taker told DDP to leave the cage and he would let him live. Taker then cut him off and hit a choke slam off the top on DDP. Taker then hit the last rice for the win.

After the match, Sara stood over DDP and yelled at him.

Winners: Undertaker & Kane to unify the WWE and WCW Tag Team Championships - This was a one-sided affair as Taker got his revenge on DDP for stalking his wife.

A video package aired saying in 2001 Taker & Kane went their separate ways, but five years later they united again.

When you face Taker & Kane you tend to get scared even when your own pyro goes off.

Smackdown, Dec. 15, 2006

(5) MVP & Mr. Kennedy vs. The Brothers of Destruction (Undertaker & Kane). MVP was set to take on Kane two nights later at Armageddon in an Inferno match and was shocked when his pyro went off as he examined the hearse at ringside. Mr. Kennedy was set to take on Undertaker in a Last Ride match on the PPV as well. Kane was no longer wearing a mask when this match took place. Taker at this point had gone back to his Deadman gimmick and was no longer riding a motorcycle down to ringside. The match was joined in progress after a commercial break. Kennedy and MVP got the upper hand and worked Taker over. Taker fired back and hit old school on MVP. Kane made a blind tag and nailed MVP with a big boot. MVP got tossed out of the ring and Kennedy ate a double choke slam. MVP saved Kennedy from a tombstone. All four men brawled in the outside and got counted out.

Kennedy sent Kane into the steel steps several times and hit a DDT in the floor. Taker and MVP brawled to the back. Kennedy got in the hearse and was going to run over Kane, but the lights went out and when they came back on Taker was in the hearse. Kane sat up and laughed, which caused MVP and Kennedy to run away.

Winners: no contest via double count out - seeing the smoke and mirrors stuff with Taker was fun after the match ended, but this was hardly worth including on a DVD set.

Smackdown, Feb. 1, 2008

(6) The Brothers of Destruction (Undertaker & Kane) vs. Mark Henry & Big Daddy V (w/Matt Striker). We fast forward to 2008 and the time machine drops us off back at Smackdown. At least the matches are in wide screen now. Last week Taker debuted Hell's Gate in V on Smackdown. Striker tried to distract Taker going for old school. Henry dragged him off the top rope, but Taker landed on his feet and nailed him with a big boot. Henry cut off Kane and tagged in V, who worked him over in the corner. Taker tagged in, but V wiped him out with a clothesline. Kane got cut off a short time later and Henry and V tagged in and out to work him over. Kane fired back and tagged in Taker, who ran wild. V took a double choke slam. Taker then hit a choke slam on Henry before locking in Hell's Gate and Henry submitted. They showed Henry "bleeding" from the mouth after Taker released the hold.

Winners: Undertaker & Kane - this more of a competitive match, but it was mostly designed to talk up the upcoming Elimination Chamber PPV and get over Taker's new Hell's Gate submission.

ECW, April 18, 2008

(7) WWE Tag Team Champions The Miz & John Morrison vs. The Brothers of Destruction (WWE World Hvt. Champion Undertaker & ECW Champion Kane) in a non-title match. Taker and Kane dominated early, but Miz and Morrison were in control after a commercial break. Kane got the upper hand, but Miz got a chop block on Kane and tagged in Morrison. Kane finally tagged in Taker, who ran wild. Taker tried to choke slam Miz and Morrison, but they escaped. Kane and Taker ended up hitting a pair of steep choke slams on Miz and Morrison a short time later. Taker then hit a tombstone on Morrison for the win.

The Brothers of Destruction stand tall after victory on ECW.

Winners: Undertaker & Kane - this was another dominant performance from Taker and Kane, who never seemed in danger to losing to the tag champs.

Overall thoughts: (5.0) – There was nothing bad on this set, which billed as a collection of the “Greatest Matches” featuring the Brothers of Destruction. The problem is that this is a bare bones set featuring a number of matches where Undertaker & Kane run through their various opponents. There are no segments to set up the matches outside of a couple of generic video packages at the beginning and then again in the middle of the DVD.

It was a fun trip down memory lane to see some of the Invasion storyline unfold at times during this release, but ultimately nearly all of the matches outside of the Taker & Kane vs. DDP & Kanyon from SummerSlam 2001 are mostly filler. The larger story of the relationship between Kane and Undertaker would make for a good DVD set with their time as a tag team being part of the narrative. The problem is that the goal of this release seems to be to put them over as a dominant force and as a result, their highest profile feud against Triple H and Stone Cold is barely touched on during this release outside of Kane & Taker winning the tag titles from Edge & Christian, despite Stone Cold and Triple H interfering in the match. If you’re a really big fan of The Brothers of Destruction, this DVD is for you, otherwise, it is worth waiting for WWE to do a complete release focusing on Kane and The Undertaker.
