A three-man booth of Doug, Gonzo, and I took in the PPV from Buffalo Wild Wings this month - Kurt was out of action due to a Father's Day event. As I arrived about 10 minutes before the show started, Gonzo informed me that he had already seen Big Show punch Mr. McMahon three times on the pre-show, and he didn't get there much before I did.
(1) Sheamus vs. Dolph Ziggler: Doug: "What does this (being in the opener) say about Sheamus in the eyes of WWE?" To me, it's more of "what does this say about the World Title?" Gonzo threatened to pop if Ziggler won, and those of you who listen to "Gonzo & The Greg" know that Gonzo is not one to do so. Gonzo overheard someone compare Ziggler to Billy Gunn - Gonzo said Ziggler is 45 times better than B.A. Right before Ziggler grabbed the rope on his roll-up attempt, we talked about heels doing subtle cheating like IRS using the ropes on an abdominal stretch. I'd like to see more of that kind of chicanery from heels. Someone tweeted to me asking if I knew what Pitbull Craig Pittman was doing these days. One of the odder questions I've gotten on the Twitter machine. The match wasn't as smooth as I expected, and the long rest-holds weren't for me. I gave this one **3/4, while Gonzo went with ***1/4, and Doug had it at ***
(2) Santino Marella vs. Ricardo Rodriguez: When Johnny Laurinaitis was walking backstage before the match, Gonzo noted that, with his outfit, he looked like the coach of the Washington Bullets. The beginning of the match looked like the two were fighting over a girl at a high school prom. "This is very awkward." - Gonzo. "What's happening in the NBA Finals right now?" - Doug. Suffice to say, they weren't big into this one. Gonzo gave it -****. I'll be more generous and say -*.
(3) Cody Rhodes vs. Christian: Gonzo said despite two of the better workers, he just couldn't get into the match (he said this about five minutes in). There really wasn't a good hook for this match on TV. **3/4 from me, ** from Doug, and **1/2 from Gonzo.
(4) The Usos vs. Prime Time Players vs. Primo & Epico vs. Tyson Kidd & Justin Gabriel: I thought this was a pretty fun match. When I first read about this match, I thought, "If the best A.W. can do is to get his guys a four-way shot for the #1 contendership rather than their actual re-match clauses, then maybe Primo & Epico should be looking elsewhere for guidance." I guess we now know why that was. Gonzo had trouble focusing with three different TV screens of interest, from golf to the NBA Finals to this PPV. "The jobbers win!" shouted someone at another table after the match ended. It got more time than I expected and it could set up a rare tag team non-title feud. **1/4
- Triple H's interview was notable only for his "we're fighters, Brock" line that Doug countered with, "Brock is, not you."
(5) Beth Phoenix vs. Layla: Gonzo noted that A.J. has replaced Maryse as his favorite Diva. Was WWE desperate to get Layla face heat, hence her dancing and mocking Beth? Layla's inexplicable title reign continues. Decent enough match, which they should be given how much these two have worked together recently. *3/4 from me and Gonzo; * for Doug.
(6) Hunico vs. Sin Cara: Gonzo thought this would be a Ryback squash when Hunico first came out. *1/2 for me, **1/2 for Doug, and ** for Gonzo.
(7) Daniel Bryan vs. C.M. Punk vs. Kane: I thought a cool result would've been Kaitlyn helping Daniel Bryan to win, then making out with him in front of A.J. I feel like Punk and Bryan could fight every night for a full year and never have the same match. They wisely kept Kane out of the way for a lot of this one. We never got a pay-off for A.J. being bumped by Big Show all those months ago...will we get one for the latest bump? Or, did we already when Kane was taking her to the back? And, where did Daniel Bryan go? ***1/2 for me, ***3/4 for Doug.
(8) Ryback vs. Dan Delaney & Rob Grymes: Jobbers can cue up music now? Gonzo wondered if the jobbers get a PPV pay-off for being on the show. 1/4*
(9) John Cena vs. Big Show: Gonzo and I discussed what would have to happen for him not to give this negative stars. He could only come up with Show being removed from the match. I bet this is how Vince really treats Laurinaitis behind the scenes. Big pop at BWW for Johnny getting fired, at least. Most of the match was just brutal, with Cena selling two minutes in like ten minutes had already gone by. They went right into first gear as soon as the match started. And to top it off, we got the kind of over-booking people complained about for so long with TNA. ,Gonzo gave it -****1/2; I'll say *.
Sitting at a 5.0 right now, and even that feels like I'm doing this PPV a favor. Oh well. Better luck next month, WWE!
