Wake the pets and call the neighbors. It's time for our DGUSA internet pay-per-view preview column!
DISCLAIMER: Projections are made by myself and for myself with absolutely no assistance from Gabe Sapolsky or Sal Hamaoui. Projections are not predictions, because this is the column where everything's made up, and the points don't count. No one knows the contents of these projections, but I, in my divine and mystical way, will ascertain the finishes to these matches despite not being caught up on my Dragon Gate DVD's. Some of our departing contestants will receive a Westbend's Freestyle Cordless Iron. Westbend's Freestyle Cordless Iron revolutionizes ironing. It's cordless, but still electric. Full-featured, easy to use, and lightweight. Furnished by Westbend. Many of our contestants are chosen from our studio audience. Enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope and mail to "Tickets, CBS Television City, 7800 Beverly Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA, 90036." Remember, this is only an exhibition. This is not a competition. Please, please, no wagering. This lineup is based on the best available information as of this writing.
By the way, if you missed Wednesday's PWTorch Livecast, where Sean Radican and I interviewed Brian Kendrick, you can find it here. Enjoy.
This is a tough weekend to run a series of Dragon Gate USA shows. For one thing, the main Dragon Gate roster is running shows in Japan. That means no CIMA, no Dragon Kid, no Yamato and no Ricochet. But Akira Tozawa and The Jimmys made the trip to the West Coast, which is probably why this show is called "Dragon Gate Revolt!" instead of "Evolve 19."
Before we get to our picks, let's do today's Wrestling History Lesson. Let's take a look at two of the stars of Saturday night's show. From the DGUSA "Mercury Rising 2012" show last year, here's DGUSA Tag Team Champion A.R. Fox battling Arik Cannon. Your announcers are Lenny Leonard and Colt Cabana.
And, as your free gift for viewing this column, let's take you back to WWE Superstars on September 1, 2011. Here's the man who headlined Friday night's "Open the Golden Gate" show in Santa Maria. It's John Morrison battling R-Truth. And if you haven't seen it, it's new to you! Scott Stanford and Josh Mathews have the call.
Enough of that. Now on with the projections!
B-Boy vs. Brian Cage vs. Drake Younger vs. Johnny Yuma vs. Johnny Goodtime vs. Ray Rosas vs. Famous B vs. Mystery Graduate From Brian Kendrick's School of Wrestling (California Fray Gauntlet Match): I don't want to try and cover the ins and outs of booking a DGUSA Fray match, especially when the important part is picking a winner. Projection? Brian Cage runs the table, finishing off Johnny Yuma to take the match and the spot on tomorrow's show.
Chuck Taylor vs. Arik Cannon: An interesting match between two wrestlers with contrasting styles, to say the least. Projection? Taylor puts Cannon away with the Awful Waffle, on his way to the big Evolve Title Tournament in April.
Rich Swann vs. "Mystery Young Dragon Gate Guy": I'm going out on a limb and saying that Eita turns out to be the mystery Dragon Gate guy. Which, by the way, makes this a lot more interesting. Projection? Eita hits his mega moonsault and grabs a major victory on US soil.
A.R. Fox vs. Samuray Del Sol: Here's another match that sounds like a lot of fun. Fox gets to step out as a singles competitor in the absence of CIMA. Samuray gets to strut his stuff on the West Coast. Projection? Fox hits the Krunch to pick up a hard-fought victory in a Cirque de Soleil style matchup.
Akira Tozawa vs. Sami Callihan: Now this looks like fun. Tozawa is one of the best in-ring performers in Dragon Gate, and Callihan always delivers on i-pay-per-view. Projection? The Tozawa Driver is too much for the D.U.F. leader, and Tozawa gets momentum going into Sunday.
The Young Bucks vs. Jimmy Susumu & Ryo Saito: The Young Bucks were one of the top acts in the beginning of DGUSA, and the promotion is obviously excited to have them back. Projection? Nick Jackson pins Saito after the Americans hit More Bang For Your Bucks. They get momentum of their own heading into Sunday's main event.
Johnny Gargano vs. Jon Davis (DGUSA Title - No Ropes Match): You know what I like best about this show so far? There's absolutely no question as to what the main event of this show is, and the advertising for the show is all about this match. Projection? While Davis is probably one of the frontrunners to take the Evolve title at WrestleMania weekend, it's hard to imagine him getting the better of the champ here in Huntington Park. Gargano hits the Hurts Donut to keep the championship.
Aftermath: On Sunday afternoon in Huntington Park, it will be "Heat 2013" on iPPV. So we'll pick Jon Davis, Johnny Gargano, Chuck Taylor, Samuray Del Sol, Jimmy Susumu and The Young Bucks. Enjoy the show!
