McNEILL's Thursday Thoughts: Will WrestleMania Weekend Feature Too Much Wrestling?

I'm not sure this has happened before, outside of WrestleMania weekends. On Sunday, Ring of Honor will hold its Final Battle internet pay-per-view in the afternoon, while WWE has its Tables, Ladders & Chairs pay-per-view in the normal Sunday night slot. Dueling pay-per-views aren't that uncommon any more. The twist here is that both shows are taking place in the same city. Final Battle is in Manhattan, while TLC will be at the new arena in Brooklyn.

It's nice that Ring of Honor has a 2:00 p.m. bell time, so fans can attend both cards on Sunday. But while WWE and ROH fans both enjoy some good grappling, don't expect to see a lot of the same people in the crowd at both shows. Attending two major events in different boroughs on the same day would be taxing for even the biggest wrestling fan. It is also going to be expensive.

It's tough for independent promotions to make ends meet these days, which is why we've seen more doubleheaders and indy supershows over the past few years. For example, last weekend, Evolve and Combat Zone Wrestling held an internet pay-per-view doubleheader in New Jersey. It sounds like fun, being able to watch two different events in the same venue. But that didn't happen. Most of the fans in Voorhees attended one show or the other, not both.

Which brings us to WrestleMania XXIX. The show will be taking place in the New Jersey Meadowlands, just across the river from New York City. Over the past few years, we have seen smaller promotions make a few dollars by holding their own events on WrestleMania weekend. This year, it seems like the entire North American wrestling universe will be in the Big Apple for the Big Show.

TNA is running a house show in Nassau County that Friday night, the same night Ring of Honor is holding its show at the Hammerstein Ballroom. Extreme Rising is running in Staten Island on Friday and Saturday night, the same two nights Pro Wrestling Syndicate will have its shows in Rahway, New Jersey. That's not counting the WrestleCon show and convention in Seacaucus, New Jersey, where there will be eight wrestling events that weekend, run under seven promotional banners.

By the time April runs around, some of the participants in the pre-WrestleMania money grab will probably have to back out. If not, you can expect one or more of these companies to feature an almost empty building, and an unexpected financial hit. Two major shows this weekend is one thing. Fifteen semi-major events and a WrestleMania in one weekend is more than the market will bear.
