This isn't a joke. I'm also not sure it would work. But I think TNA should consider raising the price of their PPVs to $60. Or at least $50-55.
It might not seem I'm speaking as a consumer advocate here because I know we all want to get as much entertainment possible for the cheapest price. But upon deeper inspection, I am because I'm putting forth a proposal that would decrease a TNA fan's PPV budget from $480 a year to $240, but give you four superior PPV experiences you'll remember instead of 12 that all blend together and have little or no historical significance. What's more consumer friendly than that?
From a business-strategy standpoint, here's some points to consider...
If TNA cut back their PPVs from 12 to 4 per year, and built them around one-on-one stipulation-free World Title matches and the best assortment of five or six other world class matches with only the top-shelf in-their-prime world-class workers, they could market their PPVs as something rare (only four per year) and truly special (featuring World Title matches that would set out to be Match of the Year contenders in every sense of the word - not just in terms of workrate, but also ramifications and historical significance between wrestlers fans care about).
Easier said than done, sure. It's not impossible, though, to aim high, take steps to get there, and end up better off even those lofty goals aren't achieved every time.
Basically, what I'm calling on TNA to do is separate their brand and reputation from what WWE does. They can't win and can barely survive being a WWE-imitator, a derivative lower-budget knockoff of what the unimaginative recyclers in power have turned TNA into the last seven or eight years.
TNA should strive to be a premium brand of pro wrestling. Market themselves not as Ford or Toyota, as WWE does (i.e. solid serviceable pro wrestling entertainment for the masses), but Audi or BMW or Volkswagon (i.e. a "German-enginered performance promotion" that won't let slobs, has-beens, pretenders, con-men, or gimps onto their shows).
On PPV, they should strip away the mini-WWE entrance stage, the mini-WWE pyro show, and anything else that looks like they're trying to be WWE but can't get there due to lack of budget and fan support to fill big arenas.
Instead, strip what they do down to the elements on PPV. Redesign the Impact Zone to be more like a nightclub or old warehouse. No cheesy spray painted foam beams. Just strip it down to the fans in the stands, a ring, and a spotlight. Nothing should look cheap or dumpy, but nothing should look like Disney World, either.
Then promise fans - and deliver - on a three (or, perhaps, gamble with three-and-a-half or four) hour PPV spectacular. No gimmick matches for the first four events (the first full year). Rename, as Bruce Mitchell suggested, the PPVs after the main event. If it's Rob Vam Dam vs. Kurt Angle, then the poster should show those two, in wrestling gear, standing under the words "RVD vs. Angle." ........ CONTINUED ON VIP SITE...
