UFC estimates that hundreds of thousands of people are watching live pirate feeds of their PPV events from a simple, seemingly unstoppable technology - someone who buys a PPV points their web cam at their TV and broadcasts the show to anyone who visits their site or a torrent site featuring it.
Dana White, rightfully, is fuming at this practice. It is stealing. People who do it rationalize it, but it is stealing. The can complain that "the last show I paid for was boring" or "I only watched two fights" or "fifty dollars is ridiculous; I'm not paying that" or "UFC is a huge company. I'm poor, they're not. They won't miss my revenue."
In any case, of the hundreds of thousands of people watching UFC and WWE PPVs for free on the Internet (and the dozens who watch pirate feeds of TNA PPVs, too), many of them would have paid, or pooled their money with friends to pay to watch it. That is lost revenue that UFC, WWE, TNA, and the talented athletes performing for the event deserved to receive their share of.
UFC and WWE have each chased down bars for broadcasting live events and charging admission fees for patrons without paying the proper "group viewing" fees that UFC and WWE charge. That type of enforcement scares other bars from ordering the show legally and paying the proper fee.
It's tougher on the Internet, though, to chase down people ordering a PPV and pointing a web cam at their TV screen. It's tough, if not most often impossible, to track where the signal is coming from. Proving who was aiming the camera at the screen can be even tougher.
It's often not an ideal viewing experience. You're often watching a picture of someone else's TV, so it's going to be grainy or at a weird angle. You're not getting crisp stereo sound on your big HD TV. You may not get clear sound at all. The picture may black out at the worst possible time. But some people are willing to deal with all of that to save $45-55 bucks (plus tax!).
There is one way to stop PPV pirating in its tracks, though. The technology, if not here now, should be available soon to DirecTV and cable companies. It's quite simple. Here's my idea (I haven't heard this suggested elsewhere, so if this happens, blame me, I suppose)...
