RADICAN: Richards & Edwards vs. Black & Danielson delivers a MOTYC at ROH's "Double Feature II" Aug 16, 2009 - 12:57:03 PM
The main event of ROH's "Double Feature II," which features ROH World Tag Team Champions Davey Richards & Eddie Edwards defending the ROH World Tag Team Titles against Bryan Danielson & Tyler Black from the April 18 event in Markham, Canada in a MOTYC that is well-worth going out of your way to see.
The action starts slow, but the crowd is hot throughout. The match really picks up once Tyler Black is sent through a table off the top rope while attempting a Phoenix Splash on Davey Richards by his partner Eddie Edwards, who comes out of nowhere and nails him with a kick to the head.
From that point forward, the crowd is red hot, as Danielson is left to his own devices for several minutes and has to fend off Richards & Edwards, who relentlessly pick apart his leg. Richards & Edwards play great heels here, as they take shortcuts and use every advantage they can behind the ref's back. Black eventually recovers and breaks up a leg submission on Danielson from Richards. He then gets the hot tag and the crowd heat increases once again with the fans in Markham chanting "This is awesome" and "ROH, ROH."
There aren't a lot of nearfalls in the match. Instead, Danielson and Black escape dangerous situations by making the save for each other. The match builds to a really satisfying finish. Danielson and Black lock Richards and Edwards in stereo cattle mutilation holds, but neither man will tap. Bobby Cruise announces there's a minute left in the 45 minute time limit. Black manages to hoist up Edwards and nail him with his God's Last Gift finisher, but the time limit expires as the ref begins his three count.
Black and Danielson have the tag champs in an uncomfortable situation.
The fans are mad at first once the match is announced as a time limit draw. Richards gets heat for not agreeing to 5 more minutes of action and bails to the back. The crowd eventually throws aside their frustration and gives Danielson and Black a standing ovation to end the show while Danielson's music plays. In a classy move, Danielson thanks the crowd for coming and everyone goes home happy.
Radican note: I rate this match at ****1/2.
