PWTorch DVD review
YouShoot with Sabu
Released by KayfabeCommentaries.com
June 2009
By Sean Radican, Torch columnist
In the latest edition of YouShoot, KayfabeCommentaries.com sat down with Sabu, who is known by most wrestling fans as an ECW legend. Sabu has wrestled all over the world and for every major federation in the US, but rarely does shoot interviews. It is established right away that Sabu doesn't like to talk and he appears nervous on camera at first, but eventually opens up and tells some great stories.
One of the main topics of conversation throughout the DVD is why did he never get a major run in WCW or WWE. There are many reasons as to why Sabu has never been showcased properly outside of ECW, some of which are surprising, but Sabu answers all of the questions about his time in WCW and WWE.
Sabu's story about why he never signed a huge 3 year WCW story is really sad, but his tales of his constant battles with WWE management are hilarious. Sabu talks about that his character is really who he is in real life. He doesn't like to talk and stutters a lot, so he's really only comfortable talking in front of close friends and family. So what did Vince McMahon want him to do? I'll give you one guess.
Sabu managed to find a number of creative ways to avoid talking. He freely admits in several amusing stories to basically doing lousy interview, but insists even if he were trying, they would have been lousy anyway. There's also a great story included about the time Sabu was removed from the Elimination Chamber match at the ECW brand's ill-fated PPV that absolutely bombed in December of 2006.
Sabu certainly wasn't shy about talking about some of the people he didn't like during his brief run in the WWE. Sabu discusses exactly what went during his lone match against John Cena on PPV and why Cena suffered a black eye. At times, Sabu gives brief answers during this shoot such as when he brings up Bobby Lashley as being a stooge, but he doesn't give any details as to what went down to make him feel that way.
One of the best stories Sabu tells involves an incident that went down between the two of them that resulted in Angle failing a wellness test. Sabu hilariously recounts the story of how he tried to help Angle, who had an embarrassing injury. Sabu offering Angle some help ultimately backfired on him and is currently impacting his negotiations with TNA.
I thought the people sending the questions in could have done a better job in terms of getting Sabu to flush out ECW's rebirth in WWE, including some specific questions about the first two "One Night Stand" PPVs and Hardcore Homecoming. Usually people come out of the woodwork for these shoots and ask some great questions, but I felt the video and email submissions fell short, which stunned me since Sabu is such an iconic figure in ECW lore.
Sabu tells some interesting stories about his in-ring style ultimately leading to him being held back by management in WWE and TNA. He talks openly about why he thinks his match at WrestleMania 23 was toned down compared to an 8 Man Tag match held on ECW on SCI-FI the following Tuesday. He also talks about his dissatisfaction with the positioning of one of his most memorable TNA PPV matches against Abyss that shockingly opened the show.
The other great story on the shoot involves Sabu's uncle, The Sheik taking care of a young Vince McMahon while working for Vince senior. After recounting what The Sheik did to Vince Jr., Sabu hilariously says his uncle should have gotten rid of him for good right then and there.
Despite the reader email and video submissions not holding up to some previous editions of YouShoot at times, this was still really good. Sabu comes across as a very quiet person, so when he unloaded on some of the biggest names in the business, it was very surprising. Sabu didn't come across as bitter either, as he had some good things to say about some of the bigger names that usually draw the ire of others on these kind of releases. I give this release a high recommendation.
