RADICAN'S TAKE
Kevin Sullivan talks religious beliefs, Benoit tragedy, Pillman, more in new YouShoot Mar 11, 2009 - 6:07:42 PM
One of my favorite innovations in the shoot industry in the last couple of years has been the YouShoot series from KayfabeCommentaries.com (KC), who in my opinion have set the benchmark for independent shoot releases since hitting the scene in 2007. KC host Sean Oliver has conducted several editions of YouShoot since introducing the series late in 2007 and in my eyes it's abundantly clear in order for the gimmick to work, people have to be willing to send in good questions and the subject has to be charismatic and outgoing.
Kevin Sullivan has been featured on other releases from KC and YouShoot is his third go-around with the company. He hasn't just appeared with KC, but has also been featured on several other shoot interviews from other companies, so in my eyes he's rapidly entering the territory of overexposure on the market KC and other companies occupy.
I enjoyed this edition of YouShoot because the gimmick works, despite Sullivan's laid back demeanor. Overall, I thought the questions submitted for Sullivan were weak at times, as it seemed people were trying to get themselves over through video submissions, which appear in a box on screen, or email submissions. Of course, host Sean Oliver also threw in some gimmicks of his own to liven things up.
There are also some guest appearances from some well-known personalities on the legends scene, who submit video questions for Sullivan to answer. I laughed at loud at Sullivan's response to Missy Hyatt's question, which is one of several highlights on this release.
Sullivan covers a lot of territory here when he feels like elaborating on the answers he's giving, as at other times, he simply gives one word answers. This shoot clocks in at over 2 hours, so clearly, Sullivan elaborates more often than not on the topics that are brought up. He even answers the question of whether or not he was on drugs while filming a recent release from RF Video.
Many of the question asked on this release revolve around the popular rumor that Sullivan is a practicing Satanist. Sullivan fields these questions in stride and clears up a lot of silly rumors. I really enjoyed Sullivan's answers, as he seemed to have a hard time believing that in 2009 some fans still believe everything surrounding a wrestlers gimmick is true.
Of course, this DVD is the ultimate dream hardcore Sullivan fans, who are very complimentary most of the time of Sullivan's career as a whole. I really enjoyed Sullivan's attitude towards the industry, as he simply said he did his job whether it be in the ring or as a booker. Sullivan tells Oliver at one point that he doesn't have any wrestling memorabilia in his home save for the shoots he's conducted with KC.
This edition of YouShoot covers a lot of territory when it comes to Sullivan's career, but the two best parts of the shoot are Sullivan discussing his angle with Brian Pillman and Chris and Nancy Benoit. Sullivan goes out of his way to give in-depth details on both of these subjects, including his opinion on how the media has ignored the plight of immediate families of Nancy and Chris in the aftermath of the tragedy.
I think anyone who orders YouShoot With Kevin Sullivan will enjoy it. The people asking questions can be quite entertaining at times. I couldn't believe that one group of fans actually built their own set and took turns asking questions and submitting them to be answered. This isn't the best edition of YouShoot I've seen, as that title belongs to YouShoot With The Honky Tonk Man, but I give it a solid recommendation.
