RADICAN BLOG: The Real Victims of the Chris Benoit Tragedy (Radican vs. Burgan debate) Mar 10, 2009 - 12:21:38 PM
PWTorch VIP members have first-look access to all of Torch columnist Sean Radican's latest blogs in the newly upgraded VIP Forum. His blogs are published first in the PWTorch VIP Forum, and Radican interacts with other VIP members and Torch staff and contributors in the blog comments area afterward. Some of Radican's blog entries will be exclusive to the VIP Forum.
I was watching KayfabeCommentaries.com's new edition of YouShoot with Kevin Sullivan (no he's not drunk here like he appeared to be on his last go-around with RF Video that everyone's been complaining about), but Sullivan does make a good point that I will cover in my review of this release in the near future.
When the topic of "Nancy & Chris" comes up, Sullivan talks about the real victims of the Benoit tragedy and how the press gave them very little sympathy. The immediate families of the Benoit tragedy are the real victims in this situation.
The pro wrestling industry is not a victim. Dr. Black is not a victim. Vince McMahon is not a victim. Dixie Carter isn't a victim. It's the immediate families that are the victims, which is something everyone should remember.
Radican Showcase correspondent Derek Burgan responds: It's hard to feel too sorry for a group of people that seemed to be more interested in fighting over the estate than expressing any true emotion over the events. I add that this is only perception, and I'm not in any way saying the three deaths didn't affect them, but I certainly remember reading a lot more stories of how they were arguing the money should be split than on any other subject.
Radican: Nothing is pretty in a situation like that. The money issue aside, the pain is still there for a lot of the relatives from both sides and I don't think the media coverage ever accurately took that into account at any time looking back on things.
Burgan: I agree, and I think the situation is a lot like the John Graziano one in that I'm sure the entire deal is life altering, and life shattering for many of his friends and family. But instead of really seeing how his death has personally affected those in his life, we get stories of his parents fighting (his dad putting out a hit on his mom), the Hogan's partying, Nick planning a reality show, etc. I imagine part of the problem is that legitimate emotional sadness doesn't sell newspapers, as they say.
Radican: I have to say I've seen a lot of sad segments on various news shows about the sorry of a family losing a loved one. I hate to sound callous, but the things I've seen on TV profiled in primetime on network TV pale in comparison to the Benoit tragedy.
It's never a pretty situation when money is involved, especially when there are two different families in play. I can't say I would ever see a situation where the two families would work things out in a rational manner. Sure, it could happen, but I think that's the exception more than the rule.
