PWTorch DVD Review
Edge: A Decade of Decadence
Radican's Notes on Disc 1
Released: December 2008
"Edge: A Decade of Decadence" is simply a collection of Edge's matches from the last ten years. Edge introduces certain sections of the DVD in character and these segments are usually followed by a nice video package to set up a series of matches. The main thing I took away from disc 1 is that it is amazing to watch Edge's transformation unfold slowly in front of my eyes thanks to a number of matches against a variety of opponents.
The highlights of the first disc are two Edge & Christian matches. Their Ladder match against the Hardy's at No Mercy 1999 still holds up as a good match, although there's been so much done with ladder matches since that time that it's hard to look back at this particular to see it as a classic. I think my memory of this match prior to re-watching it was better than the actual match upon a second viewing.
On the other hand, the Triangle Ladder match from WrestleMania 2000 for the WWE Tag Team titles with Edge & Christian vs. The Dudley Boyz vs. The Hardy Boyz still stands out as an incredible encounter. There were so many innovative and unique spots put together by all three teams. It made me yearn for the days when WWE had a strong tag division when I re-watched this match for the first time in several years. It's a heck of a match.
Edge is shown in singles matches against Owen Hart, Test, Lance Storm, and Mr. Perfect from his early years in the company. Watching these matches, I didn't see anything that would give me the impression Edge would make a fantastic heel as he is presently. His in-ring work was solid, if unspectacular.
Edge's first high-profile singles feud shown on disc 1 came against Kurt Angle in the form of a Hair vs. Hair match from Judgment Day 2002 and a Steel Cage match that took place a couple of weeks later on Smackdown. The Hair vs. Hair and Steel Cage matches are both good, but it seemed at that particular time that Edge was capable of being nothing more than an upper mid-card wrestler. He didn't do much at all to connect with the crowd during either of these matches.
Disc 1 ends with two good matches. The first features Edge capturing the WWE Tag Team titles with Hulk Hogan against Billy & Chuck on Smackdown in July of 2002. The second features Edge taking on Eddie Guerrero at Unforgiven 2002. I really enjoyed Edge's work in both of these matches, as he seemed to be hitting his stride as a babyface. Of course Eddie Guerrero just oozes charisma during his encounter against Edge here and completely outshines him in their matches, which of course he wins by using a shortcut.
I'll be back with my thoughts on disc 2 once I make my way through it. Each discs clocks in at roughly 3 hours, so you get a heck of a lot of content for $20.
