MITCHELL'S TAKE
Mitchell Short: WWE and The NBA - Locked Inside a Steel Cage May 20, 2009 - 7:41:06 PM
WWE and Vince McMahon have got to be thrilled. The Chairman gets to bluster in fake outrage to the mainstream media about something that, for once, exposes none of that unsightly blood on his hands. WWE is associated this media cycle, even in opposition, with the kind of respected sports-entertainment entity, the NBA, they can only dream of being (you know, because of all that blood.)
Even the lazy-ass sports media, ever-hungry for something to fill those fifteen-minute increments that won't compromise all their compromised revenue streams, wins with this one. They can show clips of the colorful Chairman, and spice up the segments even more with whatever whacky WWE catch-phrases they remember from flipping the channel past pro wrestling shows.
And what about the fans?
Well, what about them? I'm a pro wrestling fan, and I go back to the Jerry West/Gary Goodrich/Wilt Chamberlain Los Angles Lakers, so I like my pro basketball and I have to say…
who the hell cares what building the Raw television show is produced in?
Every WWE arena looks alike on my TV, and no one seriously thought the bigger, more mainstream, more popular NBA was going to move a Los Angeles Laker playoff game, of all things, for some low class vulgarian circus, so in the end, except for some jollies for the attention-starved Chairman, and a few extra bucks in his company's pocket, what's the difference?
Raw will be on Monday night, and so will the NBA, the same as they would have been before all this caterwauling.
