MCNEILL BLOG: With current financial difficulty, is there actually Money in this Bank? Mar 1, 2009 - 5:54:12 PM
PWTorch VIP members have first-look access to all of Torch columnist Pat McNeill's latest blogs in the newly upgraded VIP Forum. His blogs are published first in the PWTorch VIP Forum, and McNeill interacts with other VIP members and Torch staff and contributors in the blog comments area afterward. Some of McNeill's blog entries will be exclusive to the VIP Forum.
I can make all the jokes in the world about the banking crisis, credit crunch, Fannie Mae, and Freddie Mac. Here's the point. Fans aren't expecting much from WrestleMania 25's big "Money in the Bank" ladder match. Oh, they're right to anticipate a fine match, but you can excuse them for guessing that the ladderfest probably won't be one of the highlights of the night on April 5 in Houston.
Part of the problem is that World Wrestling Entertainment has done its job too well. The top wrestlers all seem to be locked up into very important matches. John Cena has Edge. Triple H has Randy Orton. Shawn Michaels has The Undertaker and Jeff Hardy has Matt Hardy. Chris Jericho will be working whatever storyline Mickey Rourke is involved in.
However, if you start looking at the eight spots open for "Money in the Bank," you realize there's a lot of potential here.
C.M. Punk - Punk won Money in the Bank last year, and he's already earned his spot for this year. He's a logical choice, and a wrestler whose fan club far exceeds his push.
John Morrison - Mister Moonlight Drive has done a fine job keeping tag team wrestling alive in the WWE. Why not put him back in Money in the Bank after his performance last year?
Mike Mizanin - After the year Miz has had, he deserved a chance at the main WrestleMania card just as much as his tag team partner does.
Montel V. Porter - He's ready to have his breakout performance, but it's hard to break out when you're mired in a never-ending feud over the United States title. This will remind some people that MVP is still part of the roster.
Shelton Benjamin - As athletic and exciting as Shelton Benjamin is, the Gold Standard belongs in this spot. Besides, it's not like the United States title will be defended at WrestleMania.
Christian - The former TNA heavyweight champion used to be pretty good at ladder matches when he was teaming with Edge, and kept in practice while down in Orlando.
Evan Bourne - WWE fans haven't seen a legitimate high flyer in so longer that they had forgotten what one looks like. Bourne hasn't been in a match this big, but it sure looks like a great breakout opportunity.
Rey Mysterio - We haven't forgotten about Mr. 619, even if the gang over at WWE Raw doesn't take Rey Rey seriously.
There you have it. These eight wrestlers together in the Money in the Bank match might, MIGHT be able to steal the show. At the very least, it will be exciting to watch.
