I get why people are upset about Hornswoggle being revealed as Vince McMahon's long lost love child. But they should understand that WWE had few viable options and went for the best of what was available.

The storyline was designed for Mr. Kennedy. When he was suspended, Vince was left for the second time in the last few months with a completely derailed central storyline. The previous one - the limo explosion (which was headed toward Linda being falsely accused, then Linda uncovering that Vince faked is own death) - was dropped mid-stream. Weeks later, an abridged acknowledgment of it led to the return of the McMahon character.

This one wasn't any easier to get out of. McMahon didn't want to take a storyline written specifically for one wrestler in particular and just insert another into it. It wouldn't have worked with anyone else. My pick, if they went the serious route, was for it to be C.M. Punk. C.M. could stand for "Child of McMahon," a clever name his mom gave to her son at birth. Punk could prove to be everything Vince didn't want in a son (other than being a bit self-righteous). Punk, the Straight Edge, could turn down all of Vince's attempts to "catch up on lost time." It could lead to a career-elevating feud with Triple H (sorta like Hunter's career-elevating feuds with established stars Mick Foley, Undertaker, The Rock, and Steve Austin). Punk would come out of the storyline a main eventer. He could swear off any family ties with McMahon and just go about the rest of his career as himself, with a footnote that he happened to be Vince's son.

They could have done that with a lot of wrestlers, but other than Punk, I didn't see it as a good fit. Whoever ended up being Vince's biological son would have to feud with Triple H, the son-in-law, and be a central figure on TV in opposition to Vince. John Cena is too big of a star to saddle with that, plus we already met his dad numerous time. It wouldn't be believable and it wouldn't help Cena's character.

Go down the list, and there was a reasonable reason not to gift or saddle anyone else on the roster with McMahon as a father. Stevie Richards was too lower-card to be worth wasting the rub on. JBL would be pointless. Triple H too creepy (even for WWE).

But Vince couldn't abandon the storyline, either. He could, I supposed, have dragged it out another month until Kennedy's suspension was up and then reveal him. That would be tough to test the patience of fans that long. Plus, Vince wanted to...
