CALDWELL BLOG 6/17: In-house notes, "Raw blog with an IV in my arm" that wasn't meant to be, Matt Hardy vows to take over the world (w/VIDEO) Jun 17, 2009 - 1:39:03 PM
-- First, some in-house notes. We didn't run a Place Your Bets feature on Monday night's Raw, although some folks took a proactive approach of sending in their PYB guesses before Raw. I was in the hospital Monday afternoon - Tuesday morning, which didn't allow me to post the PYB for everyone to jump in with their guesses, so we're officially skipping a week, then back to normal next week.
On another note, check back on Friday for the TNA Slammiversary Pick 'em contest. My summer task is tally up the WWE and TNA PPV pick 'ems from the past several PPVs to get a leaderboard live for everyone to see how they've fared in the pick selections.
-- I haven't seen Raw yet, but I'm a little concerned about two things. One is the annual "how are they going to get out of this?" storyline with Donald Trump "buying" Raw. Last year at this time, Vince McMahon's big idea for the spring was the McMillion Giveaway that ended with a TV set crashing on Vince's head. "Paul, I can't feel my legs!" became a headline for the quotebook.
Before that, it was the "who's the son of Vince McMahon?" That led to the super-swerve of Hornswoggle being fathered by Finlay in a storyline that should have been canned in the production room. So, we'll see long this latest experiment to grab mainstream attention lasts.
Pat McNeill had a great idea of doing a "Celebrity Apprentice" on Raw leading to a new GM being hired to take Trump's place on TV. I just don't think I could stomach week-after-week of awkward TV with Trump trying to force "wrestling dialogue" on Monday nights. Kind of like listening to Mike Adamle as Raw GM or ECW announcer and listening for the next botched line. Just not a pleasant TV experience.
I'm also trying to figure this one out. Triple H vs. Randy Orton version 28 on free TV next Monday before version 29 on PPV TV next Sunday. Like I said, I haven't seen Raw yet to make sense of any of this, but I'm dumbfounded by this decision for Raw's PPV main event match.
I just did miss Raw, as I started my Monday afternoon hooked up to an IV at a local emergency room clinic that only had network TV in the room. (I was in the hospital for a severe, severe allergic reaction.) I was moved to a major medical facility on Monday night that had cable TV and USA Network, but Raw was already over. I thought perhaps Silk Stalkings would be on, but the IV was taking me back to 1995 and doing the talking at that point.
It would have been quite the blog to post my perhaps absurd thoughts on "Raw with an IV stuck in my arm while sucking oxygen through a tube." Actually, maybe that would have helped make more sense of these Trump and Hunter-Orton issues.
I'll have my review of Raw and last week's ROH on HDNet sometime later this week. I've seen mixed reviews for Raw overall, so I'm curious to see how the show went down. I understand that Chris Jericho and Rey Mysterio stole the show to open the broadcast. No shock there with Jericho stuck it back to his former brand.
-- Matt Hardy is vowing to take over the world. At least, that's what he said in his latest late-night Tweet. "67 days and counting until the name HARDY takes over the world! Do the math amigos!"
I'm not sure which Hardy is Pinky and which one is Brain, but if you do the math, 67 days from today would be Summerslam 2009 in Los Angeles. Two possibilities jump to mind. One is Matt winning the WWE Title and Jeff winning the World Hvt. Title or the Hardys will be making an announcement related to their "The Hardy Show." Perhaps a TV distribution deal announced in the heart of TV land or WWE is going to turn THS into a WWE-branded reality show.
Matt & Jeff have a ton of footage from THS on YouTube, so there's easily an entire season's worth of shenanigans available to WWE to pitch to a network for a weekday airing.
This clip below, which the Hardys posted last week on YouTube, isn't exactly the most flattering portrayal of Jeff Hardy, who appeared to be only slightly out of it.
