CALDWELL'S TAKE
CALDWELL BLOG: WWE vs. Nuggets coverage - Analysis of McMahon's psyche (yikes), Background on J-Day Morning Poll May 21, 2009 - 2:15:54 AM
-- After my Houston Rockets were dismantled in Game 7 of the Western Conference Semi-Finals against the Lakers on Sunday, I knew we were about to embark on a journey of WWE posturing and posing about how unfair the Denver Nuggets and NBA would treat them for Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals.
Never did I expect this to turn into a WWE circus with Vince McMahon making SportsCenter appearances, McMahon calling out a sports team owner, and Jonathan Coachman interviewing McMahon again. C'mon, Coach, McMahon isn't signing your check anymore.
Throughout this process, the national media has been given another glimpse into McMahon's psyche. If McMahon feels wronged, he's not going to simply let it pass. And you better believe that the one time WWE is in the national spotlight for a non-drug suspension/steroid/death story, McMahon is going to milk that cow dry until it's begging for mercy.
WWE seemed to be "free and clear" of media scrutiny on this one. After all, the bullies from the NBA were bumping the traveling circus, which booked the midget, the cross-dresser, and the 7'0" giant in 2008.
Now comes information from Kroenke Sports's camp that WWE reneged on a verbal offer for WWE to run Raw in Denver on Sunday night. McMahon reportedly agreed on Tuesday, then his phone apparently died or he forgot to pay the bill, as Kroenke says they couldn't reach him to follow-up on what they claim was an agreement.
Next thing you know, WWE is booking a ten-man tag for Raw in Los Angeles with Jack Nicholson apparently teaming with Jerry Lawler's babyface team.
McMahon is threatening to reveal confidential discussions with Kroenke's camp during a press conference in New York City on Thursday afternoon. The traveling circus meets the media capital. McMahon, like a child who feels he was wronged and wants everyone and their momma to know about it, will certainly take advantage of his additional media exposure.
He had better hope he hasn't pushed and pushed and pushed too hard before Kroenke Sports fights back. McMahon is hoping that if that happens, the media won't be paying attention and they'll forget about the whole thing to cover the next twist in Bret Favre's thievery of Ric Flair's gimmick.
-- Some background on this morning's poll about the Edge vs. Jeff Hardy title match from Judgment Day. Side note: You know, 15 years ago, we could have stretched out coverage of Judgment Day for about two weeks before moving along to the next direction of WWE storylines. Now, an "off-brand" WWE PPV happens and it's quickly forgotten by 9:00 p.m. EST when Raw starts on Monday.
Anyways, we've had some internal debate at the Torch on the Edge-Hardy match. How good was it? Was it worthy of the main event slot? Would it have been rated higher if put on the undercard rather than in the main event with higher expectations?
If you watched the J-Day PPV, we're still taking PPV Reax with your review of the event at pwtorch@gmail.com. Also, be sure to vote in our poll to help settle the debate on the merits of the Edge-Hardy PPV main event.
