CALDWELL'S TAKE
CALDWELL'S POLL ANALYSIS 5/16: MVP of TNA Impact - Torch readers like Foley & Daniels, heel Don West, Daffney again May 16, 2009 - 5:53:22 PM
TORCH TNA IMPACT MVP POLL: Who was the MVP of the May 14 episode of TNA Impact? Following this week's Impact, we asked Torch readers to vote for the MVP of the show. Mick Foley was the top vote recipient with 21 percent of the vote, followed by Christopher Daniels scoring 12 percent.
Foley and Daniels have been consistently in the Top Five the first three weeks of our Impact MVP polling. I agree with Torch readers on both picks this week. Foley was clearly positioned as the top star and he delivered another great series of Foley Moments throughout the broadcast.
Foley isn't going to light up a wrestling ring anytime soon, but his character is deranged enough and schizo enough to hold the interest of the audience for two hours. He makes for good TV as his character typically starts off mellow, then he becomes more and more agitated as the show goes on, before he ultimately snaps on someone. Wait, I think I described TNA viewers.
After Foley was Daniels, who is the best of the "TNA Originals" right now in terms of being booked half-way credible. He still looks like a jerk for punching people and calling people names instead of defending himself straight-up against the Suicide accusations the past few weeks, but that's typical "shades of gray" TNA booking where no one is actually a babyface.
The other problem with being a default good guy in TNA is that Don West has so much ammo as the heel commentator to rip the so-called babyfaces to shreds. West is unfortunately very good at contributing to Daniels looking like a jerk, which has the side-effect of Daniels having his legs cut out from under him on a weekly basis. It's entertaining to listen to West rip the storylines, but it doesn't help TNA build up any new babyfaces.
Speaking of West, he took the third spot on the MVP voting with nearly 10 percent of the vote. West was produced to rip the abundance of Jeff Jarrett videos, make Mike Tenay scream, rip Daniels as Suicide or Suicide as Daniels, and make other assorted statements to entertain viewers who can't stand TNA's booking or storylines.
As a result, Torch readers showed a broadcaster more love than wrestlers on the TNA roster except for Foley and Daniels. Even more to the point that Torch readers simply aren't buying into the male wrestling characters on the show is that Daffney took fourth place in the MVP voting.
Daffney has certainly made efficient use of her TV time to turn into MVP votes. She's only appeared in brief segments the past three weeks, but she's averaging 7.3 percent in the MVP vote. That puts her in a tie with Sting through three weeks.
Rounding out the Top Five were Awesome Kong and the Machineguns with 6 percent of the vote. Kong squashed Cute Kip James in his TV return, while the Guns split time in the ring and tormenting Daniels on the show.
