CALDWELL'S TAKE
CALDWELL'S POLL ANALYSIS 5/3: MVP of TNA Impact - Shelley & Sabin lead the voting, followed by surprising Knockout choice May 3, 2009 - 3:32:05 PM
TORCH TNA IMPACT POLL 4/30: Who was the MVP of the April 30 TNA Impact? After Thursday night's edition of TNA Impact, we asked Torch readers to vote for the MVP of this week's show. As expected, Chris Sabin and Alex Shelley won the voting with a healthy 21 percent of the vote, but there was a surprising Knockout pick grabbing votes for second place.
The thing about TNA Impact is that no two viewers agree on what they like and don't like about Impact. TNA throws so much against the wall - for better or worse - and so much of it is completely off the wall (Mick Foley talking to himself) that it comes down to personal taste.
TNA doesn't focus on babyfaces and heels and it's very difficult to cheer for the babyfaces when Don West is scripted to point out their flaws and how ridiculous the booking is. So, everything comes down to personal preference.
One thing Torch readers can agree on is the awesomeness of the Motor City Machineguns on Impact. TNA didn't present them as a credible act in the ring, as they lost to Amazing Red & Suicide, but their promo with Christopher Daniels was the top moment of the show, in my eyes.
Even Chris Sabin showed some uncharacteristic passion on this week's episode, while Alex Shelley's leadership qualities were reinforced to enhance his character. They might have lost a match, they might have been piefaced and beaten up by Daniels at the end of the segment, but their indirect mockery of TNA's booking and solid performances throughout the show endeared them to Torch readers.
Guns's opponents on the show, Amazing Red & Suicide, were in a dead lock with Daffney for second place in the MVP poll. I was rather surprised by the Daffney pick, as she was limited to a simple backstage interview with Lauren. That was it.
Apparently Daffney's maniacal laugh following Lauren's assertion that Abyss has no interest in her was so great that it stuck with Torch readers. I don't know how to explain it, but Daff picked up a solid 11 percent of the votes.
Amazing Red & Suicide tied with Daffney for second place, most likely due to Red's return to TNA after a lengthy absence, and them working an exciting, eye-pleasing match with the Guns. Notice that Kevin Nash and Booker T received a combined three percent of votes for their efforts in the TV main event.
Nash & Booker worked such a slow, sluggish pace in the ring compared to Red & Suicide. Based on the voting, it's obvious Torch readers gravitated toward the high-flying action rather than star power offered by the Mafia in the main event.
Nash & Booker's opponents, A.J. Styles & Samoa Joe, didn't fare much better in the MVP voting. They combined for four percent of MVP votes, obviously dragged down by a really bad TV main event and the consistently poor booking of the TNA Original Frontline.
