CALDWELL'S TAKE
CALDWELL'S POLL ANALYSIS 4/29: ECW TV MVP - Torch readers pick from Christian, Dreamer, Swagger; no love for Paul Burchill Apr 29, 2009 - 6:05:56 PM
Torch ECW TV Poll: Who was the MVP of the 4/28 ECW TV? We asked Torch readers to select the MVP of last night's ECW TV show. Torch readers went for the trifecta of Christian #1, Tommy Dreamer #2, and Jack Swagger #3.
Last night's show was Christian's first night as ECW champion and I thought he fared well in the opening promo and orchestrated a nice TV main event against Tommy Dreamer. Christian didn't have the "home run" promo or deliver an epic TV match, but he carried the show with two very good TV segments.
Right now, Christian's job as the face of the ECW brand is to simply keep viewers invested in the product while 10-15 percent of the regular audience is watching the NBA Playoffs until the end of May.
WWE needs a spark from Christian to keep viewers tuned in, especially with the timeslot shifting back an hour, making it more difficult to grab viewers. Instead of being in the middle of prime time TV, ECW will be at the end of prime time when many viewers on the East Coast are heading to sleep.
Christian picked up 37 percent of the MVP vote and Tommy Dreamer grabbed a healthy 20 percent for his contributions to the opening and closing segments of the show.
Dreamer's role on ECW TV is up-in-the-air going forward based on the pattern of Dreamer being featured for a few weeks, then completely ignored for another few weeks, before WWE decides to pick up the ECW Title Quest storyline.
Dreamer only has six weeks left on his WWE contract, which means WWE is either keeping him strong on TV to build to the Extreme Rules PPV at the beginning of June or they're going to give him the honorary Ricky Ortiz rally towel treatment ignore him again.
Third place was Jack Swagger with 13 percent of the vote. Swagger is my pick for MVP of the show, as his star continues to rise each week. Although he lost the ECW Title at Backlash, he is constantly refining the presentation of his heel character.
Swagger closing the show with that menacing, cocky look after blasting Christian and Dreamer was great stuff to continue building his persona. Swagger doesn't come across that well in the "authority" department, though, as ECW GM Tiffany regularly one-ups him to the embarrassment of Swagger's character.
Torch readers also showed some love to Tyson Kidd, who picked up 9 percent of the vote after his sold effort against Finlay in the only other match on the show. I thought Kidd was the best in-ring wrestler on last night's show, as he showed some personality between the ropes and really worked his matholds while screaming at Finlay.
Rounding out the Top Five was Hurricane Helms. Helms + suit + announcing gig isn't exactly the ideal use of Helms, but we'll see if he can help bring out some personality from the likes of Evan Bourne on a weekly basis by rubbing shoulders with the younger talent.
Also in that interview segment was Paul Burchill. Torch readers didn't show him any love, as Burchill received zero votes for MVP of the show. On the other hand, Burchill's valet, Katie Lea, picked up 3 percent of the MVP vote. Even Josh Mathews picked up a full 1 percent.
