WWE Smackdown TV ratings December 16/19

The replay of WWE's Super Smackdown show on Friday, December 19 scored a 1.54 rating in its usual timeslot. The airing topping a 1.51 rating for the live special on USA Network as part of "WWE Week."

The Syfy airing drew 1.995 million viewers, nearly topping 2.027 million viewers for the live special.

The replay ranked #6 in overall viewers, #7 in males 18-34, and #10 in males 18-49 on cable TV Friday night.

*** Ratings for USA Network edition ***

- The steady decline of WWE's TV ratings on USA Network continued with a poor Super Smackdown live rating.

The live special on Tuesday, December 16 scored a 1.51 rating and averaged 2.027 million viewers. Some comparisons:

- The previous week's Smackdown in its regular timeslot on Syfy scored a 1.74 rating.

- The previous low for Smackdown this year was a 1.37 rating on the Fourth of July.

- The previous live Smackdown special on USA Network two years ago drew a 2.29 rating. (There was no special on USA last year.)

At the time of the December 2012 live Smackdown, the previous night's Raw drew a 2.89 rating. So, the natural drop-off was 20 percent.

This year, Monday's Raw drew a near-year-low 2.66 rating and the live Smackdown drew a 1.51 rating, a drop-off of 43 percent.

- On cable TV Tuesday night, Super Smackdown ranked #11 in overall viewers, #16 in males 18-34, and #11 in m18-49.

Caldwell's Analysis: The product was healthier two years ago since WWE was just entering the Three-Hour Raw Era and there was still the slightest sense of a brand separation. But, this picture at the end of 2014 is not good. Pick a reason - three-hour Raws over-exposing under-developed talent, the lack of a brand split making Smackdown an afterthought, undisciplined booking making matches feel unimportant, damage done since Survivor Series, and Roman Reigns's in-ring return not a big hook since WWE couldn't resist the urge to keep him off TV while injured so that he was special when he returned to TV. Same analysis as Raw TV ratings that WWE and USA Network will probably talk about bringing a McMahon back to TV, but the issues run much deeper than a McMahon Bandaid.
