As part of a media tour promoting this weekend's WWE house shows, recent World Hvt. champion Dolph Ziggler talked in-depth about his concussion situation and dropping the World Title in an interview with the Carroll County Times (Md.).
"I had a bad headache for a solid two weeks afterwards," Ziggler told reporter S. Wayne Carter, Jr. "I was diagnosed with retrograde amnesia which meant I ended up losing a day and a half, two days of my memory instantly."
Ziggler continued: "Even though when the incident happened, there was like five more minutes of match that I went through and actually executed very well."
It's unclear which "match" Ziggler referred to in his comments. The narrative presented by WWE is that Ziggler suffered a concussion in a non-match situation when Jack Swagger kicked him in the head on the May 10 Smackdown, which was taped May 7.
It's worth noting that the night before on the May 6 Raw, Ziggler took a kick to the head from Alberto Del Rio mid-way through an actual match. Ziggler then finished the match, which lasted about 5-8 more minutes after the mid-match kick.
Also in the interview, Ziggler talked about dropping the World Title shortly after returning to TV following the concussion. Ziggler mixed reality and fiction discussing his feelings on losing the title to Alberto Del Rio at Payback in June.
"I was lucky enough to cash in my Money in the Bank, become World Heavyweight Champion at this amazing 'Monday Night Raw' with this crowd that was electric and I don’t know that we can ever reproduce again," Ziggler said. "And to have one week of some TVs go back, have a concussion, be out five weeks, have one title defense and lose it, I’ve never been more frustrated in my entire WWE career when that happened."
Although wrestlers should be able to get downtime without being injured or hurt, Ziggler noted that the concussion may have worked out for him to get a break from wrestling "30-minute matches" every week since WWE is easing him back into the ring.
"I have a blast doing them, the crowd loves seeing them, but maybe this is a blessing in disguise, it’s a nice little break so you don’t see me in one of those matches I have every single night, it gives a little break," Ziggler said.
