A Thursday post on WWE's Facebook page lists current WWE champion The Rock for the Extreme Rules PPV in May, which is the PPV after WrestleMania 29.
As noted during Monday's Raw, tickets for the PPV in St. Louis go on-sale this weekend, but there is no indication on the Scottrade Arena website that Rock will be part of the show. Also, WWE is not listing Rock on the official roster page for Extreme Rules.
Immediately after the April 8 Raw the night after WrestleMania, Rock is scheduled to take off for a big international movie shoot of "Hercules." Extreme Rules is on May 19, which would give Rock a six-week window to hypothetically shoot the movie before returning to WWE.
The May 19 date makes things interesting. On one hand, it would allow Rock more time in-between Mania and the next PPV. But, Rock appearing at Extreme Rules would have made more sense in recent years when the PPV aired the last Sunday of April, as it would coincide with this year's movie release of "Pain & Gain" at the end of April.
But, there is a promotional tie-in option for Rock's big action movie of the spring season, "Fast 6," which is due out May 24.
Caldwell's Analysis: If Rock is part of Extreme Rules, it appears that WWE would go ahead with an immediate WrestleMania title re-match (assuming John Cena wins the title at Mania), which would then lead to Rock-Cena III with a full six-week build-up to the re-match. Of course, Rock would not be part of the build-up since he will be overseas filming "Hercules," but the re-match would basically sell itself. And, WWE is really trying to push Extreme Rules to parlay WrestleMania's success into a big PPV audience for a non-traditional event. See: WWE giving away John Cena vs. Brock Lesnar immediately after WM28 last year.
It would also make sense to get Rock-Cena III out of the way because the rumored plan for WrestleMania 30 is not Rock-Cena III, but Rock vs. Brock Lesnar, who has signed a two-year extension to be part of WWE until at least WrestleMania 31. Rock being part of Extreme Rules would certainly make things interesting.
