UPDATE: John Cena said Tuesday morning that his leg injury is "good news / bad news" following an examination. Cena did not disclose further details.
"MRI was typical good news bad news scenario. I've dealt with knees issues for the past few yrs, I'll add one more to that list," Cena tweeted. "I know the risks of what can happen to me and I'm willing to play the odds. #nevergiveup c u 2nite grand rapids."
WWE's website followed up on the story by making the injury seem like part of an angle to promote the Cena-Dolph Ziggler feud, while also teasing an announcement from Cena at the Smackdown taping.
*** Original Story Monday night ***
WWE top star John Cena appeared to injure his knee or ankle during an in-ring segment on Monday's Raw. Cena then played up the injury as legit and not a work in a tweet following Raw.
"I am headed to Grand Rapids right now for early morn MRI on left knee," Cena tweeted. "@WWE no matter what the result, I will be in the ring tomorrow!"
Cena is scheduled to appear at Tuesday's Smackdown TV taping in Grand Rapids. By the time of the taping, Cena may know the extent of what is being presented as a legit injury.
The apparent injury occurred when Cena was chasing Dolph Ziggler out of the ring, and appeared to twist his ankle, which WWE later played up as a knee injury, upon landing on the floor. Cena then half-hobbled up the ramp to chase Ziggler to the back. The injury could be considered a freak accident, but also a sign that wear and tear is adding up, considering Cena recently missed one full month of in-ring action due to an elbow injury. Coincidentally, Cena just launched a new merchandising line that promotes his tenth year with the company.
Cena's injury - if legit - and potential ramifications was the top story coming out of Raw. There were no title matches, no matches announced for the TLC PPV, and the show concluded with a repeat of Survivor Series's ending with Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose, and Roman Reigns putting Ryback through a table to save C.M. Punk. At the end of the show, Punk feigned having nothing to do with Team Rollins before standing tall over a fallen Ryback.
