Because WWE house shows rarely feature title changes, feature repeat matches, and are not televised, many people view the weekend events as inconsequential. However, what happens on house shows (or before or after a show) can make-or-break a WWE wrestler's career, according to former WWE Creative team writer Andrew Goldstein on Friday's PWTorch Livecast with PWTorch editor Wade Keller.
"I remember many instances where we would be in a production meeting and Vince (McMahon) would ask, 'How was so-and-so on the house shows?' And, your career is made or broken by the agents's reviews of how you do on the house shows," said Goldstein.
"And, it may not be your actual performance on the house shows. It may just be if you pissed off Fit Finlay at the bar that night. Or, if you said something that annoyed Arn Anderson."
Goldstein, who wrote for WWE in the mid-2000s, recalled C.M. Punk being "in the doghouse further than you could ever imagine" during his run on the ECW brand, which led to him being held back from advancing to Raw or Smackdown.
Goldstein added, "I remember this story - MVP was scheduled to debut on a PPV beating a returning Chris Benoit. That was the plan. We had the whole thing mapped out. Then, we got the PPV production meeting and the agent said, 'I don't think he's ready. Let's have MVP beat a local.'
"So, on a PPV that fans were paying for, MVP - this character that no one knew and had only seen in vignettes - beat a 215-lb. local because they didn't care we had a story written and were going somewhere with it. They just thought, 'Well, this kid from Developmental is not ready to beat Chris Benoit.'"
Goldstein concluded on the topic: "There are any number of people whispering in (Vince McMahon's) ear. Manipulating him or putting this person over or this person over, crapping on this guy, and then you get to TV and everything changes."
