WWE TV personality Paul Heyman took credit for WWE's "Attitude Era" in an interview with ESPN.com promoting the new Attitude Era-themed "WWE '13" video game. As a result, Heyman said he thinks McMahon should admit to being a "Paul Heyman guy."
"Vince McMahon became a billionaire based on Attitude, and Attitude was spawned by the ECW experience. If I could give you one sound bite, one headline, it’s this: Vince McMahon might not proclaim himself to be a Paul Heyman guy, but he sure should," Heyman told ESPN.com's Jon Robinson.
Heyman, who wrote scripts for the new video game, says he and Brock Lesnar are still surprised they're back in WWE this year after burning bridges in the past, but he's learned that McMahon will do business with anyone if it's beneficial to his company.
"I never thought I’d go back, no way, and neither did Brock," Heyman said. "We constantly say it to each other, like, 'Can you believe we’re doing this?' Who would’ve predicted this a year ago? No way. It’s one of those wild, crazy curves that life throws at you, but to do it, and to be having so much fun doing it, it’s something neither one of us could’ve envisioned."
Heyman is now "advising" C.M. Punk on WWE television while Lesnar remains off television, and he doesn't see a match between the two occurring in WWE.
"I don’t know (about) the dynamic of that match because they are two such different styles of professional wrestling," Heyman said. "Brock is an explosive MMA-style fighter who brings with him the element of UFC into the ring with him now. And while Punk has trained in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, he is more the equivalent of the modern 60-minute man... So there’s a very big and different dynamic between Brock Lesnar and C.M. Punk, almost like we’re talking about two different genres within the same category of professional wrestling/sports entertainment."
Also in the interview, Heyman previews the likely Punk-The Rock title match at the Royal Rumble, discusses Steve Austin and Mick Foley finding their way in ECW before going to WWE, and offers more insight on the "WWE '13" video game.
