WWE and Bret Hart have agreed to a short-term talent contract for Bret Hart to appear on WWE TV during WrestleMania season, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

Hart reportedly signed a deal that will last from January 1 to April 10. According to the report, there is a "good chance" Hart will make his return on the January 4 Raw up against TNA Impact's three-hour special.

Also included in the contract is a DVD deal with a tentative focus on the Hart Foundation due out in 2010. WWE previously worked Hart on a Bret Hart-themed DVD in 2005, but Hart did not appear on TV to promote the project.

Hart's name was brought up on this week's WWE Raw when guest host Dennis Miller was scripted to bring up Hart's name seemingly out-of-the-blue while talking to Vince McMahon about future guest hosts.

As part of the storyline to lay the foundation for Hart's return, McMahon used the "Bret screwed Bret" line and walked away from Miller "in a foul mood" at the mere mention of Hart's name.

Caldwell's Analysis: There are several different elements in play here. First, TV-related. Hart will obviously be coming in as a babyface to apparently oppose McMahon's character. It's been long enough that McMahon can justify putting himself back on TV in a full-time TV role to help boost ratings and interest in the product leading to WrestleMania. McMahon wasn't shy about proclaiming himself the biggest star in WWE during the MSG Raw several weeks ago, so it makes sense to put McMahon back on TV for a power vs. power storyline between the likable Hart and unlikable McMahon.

As for the behind-the-scenes aspect, Hart taking a paycheck from WWE and agreeing to work with WWE as a "talent" means Hart will be retracting most of what he's said about WWE over the past 12 years since the Montreal Screwjob. "I don’t ever want to be in a position where I have to work and actually expect to make a check from them or contract," Hart said on a radio interview in February.

Many wrestlers, including Ric Flair, have accused Hart of being bitter about Montreal and still holding onto a grudge against McMahon and WWE. This could be Hart's way of saying he's willing to "play ball" and trying to be the "bigger man" by agreeing to work with WWE again.
