WWE Survivor Series PPV on-site report
November 22, 2009
Washington, D.C.
Report by Marcus Lee of Suitland, Md., Torch reader
Interesting note: the people behind me knew a lady who worked with WWE. She came to sit with them during the World Heavyweight Title match and told us that Big Show hurt his knee and will more than likely going in for surgery today or tomorrow. That explains the brace and everyone there saw how much pain he was in. The guy could barely move around. She also told us before the main event that Cena was winning.
Before the PPV earlier in the day, the Bella Twins came to the restaurant I was eating at (located outside the Verizon Center), and gave an interview on the local Comcast SportsNet channel regarding the Redskins.
The doors opened around 6:45 p.m. The Verizon Center appeared to be a virtual sellout. This was the third WWE PPV at Verizon Center (2005 Summerslam and 2007 Cyber Sunday) and the first Survivor Series in the area since 1995 (held at the old USAir Arena in Landover, Md.). I sat in the section next to the hard camera and audio/visual area. They were watching the Raiders-Bengals NFL game before the PPV began. I sat in section 101 behind the SE turnbuckle. The take-home chairs were in an army fatigue design with DX on them. Wow, all that for $300.
Before the show began, they showed the Tribute to the Troops highlight video, a WrestleMania 25 highlight video, and a promo for WrestleMania 26. Justin Roberts and Tony Chimel came out, followed by Michael Cole, Matt Striker, and Jerry "The King" Lawler. Members of the US National Guard and Armed Forces sat behind the announcers.
Dark match: Santino defeated Chavo. Santino got a lot of applause and some laughter with some of his antics. Probably your typical live event/house show match. Santino won with a rollup.
PPV Notes
-- The ring apron (turnbuckles included) were changed during the backstage segment with Team Kingston and the Batista-Rey recap after the opening match.
-- The crowd cheered Batista as the hometown guy by chanting "one more time" after each Batistabomb. (We needed some anger release after the Redskins lost to the Cowboys.)
-- Kofi had a huge pop when he pinned Orton. He is definitely getting over. Matt Hardy also got a pretty loud pop. The woman's match was the quietest by far. When HBK superkicked Triple H to start the match, everyone was in shock and started an "HBK" chant. There were the usual pro and anti-Cena chants.
Post-PPV Notes
-- HBK and Triple H got up slowly and talked to each other with HBK's goofy gestures. Triple H then pointed to the entrance ramp where Cena had just left from, gave him a crotch chop and the two hugged and embraced each other. No sign of a turn, though they both pointed at a sign in the crowd that said "HHH vs. HBK at WrestleMania XXVI..." and shrugged their shoulders at it. They then went around high-fiving guys and commentators before posing at the top of the stage and leaving. Justin Roberts thanked us for coming and that they'd hope to be back in DC in the near future. Interestingly, they didn't plug the 11/28 Smackdown Live Event in nearby Upper Marlboro, Md.
One guy got his camera confiscated (he was sitting right next to my friend) during Taker's entrance. I was close to getting one of the DX glowsticks. One person threw a glowstick back in the ring after Triple H threw it. Hunter then decided to not throw back the glow stick to that area.
