WWE News: Randy Orton interviewed on ESPN - discusses "the Punt" on Vince McMahon, adding members to Legacy Jan 24, 2009 - 2:20:30 AM
Splashed on the front page of ESPN.com on Saturday morning is an interview with WWE star Randy Orton to preview the Royal Rumble PPV on Sunday night.
Orton remained in character for most of the questions, so as not to give away storyline direction after "the Punt" on Vince McMahon, but he discussed the show-ending moment from Raw.
"If you watch the replay, I wasn't too careful. I definitely let him have it," Orton told Jon Robinson on ESPN. "My wife DVR'd it for me because I had to watch it for myself. My foot still hurts. And if that's the case, I'm sure he has a nice migraine right now."
Orton says he acts like a jerk outside of the ring to enhance his TV character, which is something he picked up from his dad, Cowboy Bob Orton.
"It might sound silly, but a lot of those things come into play when you're playing a character," Orton said. "You meet people outside of the ring, and if you act a certain kind of way, then they really believe that this guy is a bastard. They want to watch, tune in, buy tickets to see me get my ass handed to me, and I think that's why I'm in the position I'm at right now, because I understand that. I understand the psychology of the sport, especially inside the ring."
Orton talks about learning about the business during his Evolution days with Triple H, Ric Flair, and Batista. Now, he's looking to add a fourth member, similar to Batista in Evolution, as the muscle in the Legacy group alongside Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase, Jr.
Orton suggests Mike Rotunda's sons down in Florida developmental or Harry (D.H.) Smith, who has been rumored to be joining the group when he re-joins the WWE roster.
"He's a strong boy, and I think he's at that age now where he's learned from some of the mistakes he's made in the past," Orton said about Smith. "He originally debuted as D.H. Smith, but he's a completely different person right now. I have my eye on him, but we'll have to see what the future holds."
Asked whether he would like to add Stephanie McMahon to the group, Orton played coy about the potential storyline direction. "I never really thought about that, but that's a really good idea," Orton said. "But I don't think Shane McMahon and Stephanie are too happy about what I did to their dad Monday night. We'll have to wait and see what comes of that."
