WWE News: Rey Mysterio says how much longer he'll wrestle; why he's still wrestling today Jan 23, 2009 - 3:33:36 PM
WWE star Rey Mysterio is waking up every morning with pain in his right arm following biceps surgery last year. Before that, he was limping around the house with pain in his knee.
The physical toll is adding up, but Ray says he's "still here pushing strong." How much longer he can last will depend on whether he still has passion for wrestling a year from now.
"I definitely don't want to continue wrestling if I don't have to," Mysterio told Kevin Eck in the Baltimore Sun. "I'm at the point right now that I'm doing it because I still enjoy it. But I don't know, maybe in a year from now my passion might be gone, and I might lean more toward my family."
Rey says it's tough for him to make a prediction on whether he'll still have that passion a year from now, but he's feeling the injuries add up when he's been in the wrestling business for nearly 20 years now.
"I do feel beat up," Rey said. "I do have a lot of injuries that I'm carrying with me every time I step into the ring, but I think only God can judge at this point."
Mysterio knows his earlier days of flying around the ring and not taking advice on slowing down his style to increase his longevity have put himself in this position. Granted, the style made him stand out to become a major star in wrestling, but he has advice for wrestlers like Evan Bourne.
"Sometimes you just have to learn the hard way, and that's by getting injured. Evan Bourne is just like me," Ray said. "Hopefully, he can pick out his offensive moves, because he's got so many and he's so incredible to watch. I just hope he takes the advice of all of us who have been around a little bit longer and he can tone it down. That way he can last a lot longer."
Rey also commented on the Royal Rumble, which he won three years ago following Eddie Guerrero's death. He says he was left with the responsibility of carrying the Latino market and pushed through despite hurting from losing Eddie. Now, he sees Vickie Guerrero as an extension of Eddie with the development of her persona.
"This is a Vickie that was very, very hidden deep down inside of her," Rey said about whether he's surprised how well she pulls off the Smackdown GM role. "Then again, I should say I'm not surprised because of the man she was married to. She's done an incredible job."
