WWE News: Bobby Lashley wants to fight Brock Lesnar; discusses Vince McMahon in and out of the ring Nov 26, 2008 - 12:36:50 PM
Former WWE star Bobby Lashley makes his MMA debut on December 13 in Miami, Fla. after spending several months training after his WWE career ended. His approach to entering MMA is not to be just another pro wrestler going into MMA, though.
"I don't want people to see this as 'Oh, here's another pro wrestler coming in,'" Lashley told TAGG radio today. Much like Brock Lesnar, he doesn't want to be considered a pro wrestler fighting, but a fighter who used to be an amateur wrestler.
On the radio show, which is co-hosted by MMA fighter and TNA personality Frank Trigg, Lashley said he would consider entering UFC for a potential battle against Brock if his current deal with the AFL organization falls through.
"If I had to go against Brock right now, I would definitely be up for it," Lashley said. "As far as wrestling, a lot of it would be a battle of takedowns. I think I would do real well." Lashley added that he has talked to UFC president Dana White in the past and he would be knocking on UFC's door if the opportunity arises.
Lashley also revealed in the interview that he did talk to TNA after leaving WWE earlier this year, but his focus was on fighting. He made it clear to Vince McMahon prior to joining WWE and McMahon knew the time would come when Lashley would want to leave WWE for fighting.
"It was on good terms. It was a decision that we made," Lashley said of leaving WWE. "I spoke with Vince early on in my career about fighting." Lashley continued that halfway into his WWE career, he talked to McMahon about fighting, and McMahon asked him to hold off for a little bit until the recent amicable split.
"Vince kinda knew it was coming," Lashley said. "No bridges burned." He also commented on the street fight he had with McMahon at WrestleMania 22. Lashley said McMahon likes to bang around in the ring and "take a shot back." He put him up there as one of the toughest people he's been in the ring with.
FYI: Lashley's first MMA fight takes place December 13 in Miami at the American Airlines Arena. HDNet will be covering the event along with several media outlets at Lashley's request. Be sure to check out our sister site, MMATorch.com for the latest MMA news and headlines.
