WWE News: Sneak peek at WWE Kids magazine with commentary from WWE executive on marketing and content Apr 5, 2008 - 1:30:25 PM
The Stamford (Ct.) Advocate published a story on WWE's new kids magazine aimed at 6-14-year-olds. "This is part of a larger company youth initiative," said Bob Lee, vice president and publishing director for WWE. "We're looking for a logical brand extension and WWE magazine has had great success."
The article includes commentary from industry insiders on whether it's a logical move to launch a separate magazine when the magazine industry is weak. "They understand their customers," said Michael Pachter, an analyst with Wedbush Morgan Securities in Los Angeles. "It's not like they have to start up a brand new organization. They're also very good at using their print publications as advertising for the rest of their productions."
WWE's well-defined demographic gives them an edge over competing magazines when the economy is down and more media companies are moving toward online content. WWE hopes the content will encourage more kids to read in school and at home. "People love the concept," WWE's Lee said. "It's tough to get kids to read these days. This is engaging. It helps them with their vocabulary. It's win-win."
The article includes a sneak-peek at some of the content in the first issue, which will launch at Wal-Mart and other retailers on April 14. Lee said one example of the content is for readers to identity Abraham Lincoln and Elvis Presley while wearing Rey Mysterio masks. They also have fitness tips to be like the WWE wrestlers. "Our superstars are in fabulous shape," Lee said. "They eat right and exercise."
