TORCH TRIVIA 2/12: Answer to who was "fined" $5,000 on a WWE house show 14 years ago Feb 13, 2009 - 9:58:53 AM
Original question: At a WWE house show in Philadelphia on February 12, 1995, one wrestler was storyline "fined" $5,000 for not releasing a hold after winning a match. Who was the deviant star?
The answer is (c) Bret Hart. Although it was at the time of Bob Backlund "snapping" on folks with that crossface chicken wing, Bret Hart was being "fined" at WWE house shows for keeping the Sharpshooter locked in for too long on weaker opponents. Interestingly, the night before in Scranton, Pa. (home of "The Office"), Hart was only "fined" $2,000. Apparently Philly wasn't a draw and they needed an additional $3k the next night.
I was very close to "stumping the Dusty," but he accurately guessed Bret Hart. We'll give him some love... My first thought was Bob Backlund, but Bret Hart was in a bad mood, which started at the 1994 Survivor Series when Bret lost the WWF title to Backlund in a submission match when Owen tricked their mother Helen to throw in the towel. After that, there were multiple times on WWF TV and house shows when Bret would wrestle either Backlund, Owen, or both where he would put either one in the Sharpshooter and wouldn't let go after the match was over.
-- Checking on the responses, our winners for Feb. 12 Torch Trivia question weren't as numerous because of the stumping that finally occurred in the third month of booking Torch Trivia: regular site readers - Disco Studd, Cid, Dusty Robinson (three in a row), and Nate (three in a row); email readers - Sam Robinson (three in a row).
-- Torch VIP members could have looked up the answer in the Torch VIP Appendix by searching the Torch back-issue section. Over 1,000 TV reports, Newswires, and columns are available for VIP subscribers.
