TORCH TRIVIA 1/29: Answer to why Dusty Rhodes joined the NWO 11 years ago Jan 30, 2009 - 9:01:03 AM
Original question: Way back back to WCW Thunder from January 29, 1998, Dusty Rhodes announced he was joining the NWO and cut a promo on the "marks on the Internet." What was his reasoning for defecting from WCW to the NWO?
(a) Tired of being on the same side as his son, Dustin
(b) Mean Gene and Larry Zbyszko were yelling over him on commentary
(c) Been angry with WCW ever since the "suits" tried to tear down what he built
(d) Wanted to be on a winning team
The answer is (c) Angry with the "suits." Dusty Rhodes cut a promo reasoning that he was tired of answering to the corporate "suits" who were trying to tear down what he started in WCW way back in the day. Torch editor Wade Keller wrote in his Thunder report: "If he's talking about predictable finishes, attendance-killing false title changes and run-ins, ego-centric booking, and red ink, then, yeah, corporate America did tear down what he built."
Torch Trivia expert Jae Wiggz checks in: "This showed how directionless and erratic WCW's booking was. They were supposed to be anti-tradition and take over WCW. They let ANYONE join (Vincent, The Disciple, a phony Sting, Disco Inferno). Not only that, but with all of the divisions of the NWO, it just fell flat on its face."
