TORCH TRIVIA 1/27: Answer to new WCW commish at Clash of the Champions 15 years ago Jan 28, 2009 - 2:16:57 AM
Original question: At WCW's Clash of Champions show on January 27, 1994 featuring Sting & Ric Flair vs. Rick Rude & Vader, a new commissioner was named by Mean Gene Okerlund after countless 900-hotline plugs. Who was named the new WCW commissioner?
(a) Bobby Heenan
(b) Nick Bockwinkle
(c) Terry Funk
(d) J.J. Dillon
The answer is (b) Nick Bockwinkle. The former AWA champion was ushered in as the new commissioner on the same show Bobby Heenan debuted in WCW as color commentator. Okerlund announced that Nick Bockwinkle was the new WCW commissioner after listing candidates such as Verne Gagne, Lou Thesz, and Bruno Sammartino. Bobby Heenan mentioned during commentary, "It might be me!" Bockwinkle did a brief interview during which he said there would be no new legislation yet.
Let's check with Torch Trivia leader Dusty Robinson for a word on how long Nick's appointment lasted... He was Commissioner for only a year. What I remember the most about Bockwinkle's reign is the storyline where Hulk Hogan wanted him to put Ric Flair back on the active roster at the beginning of 1995 after Hogan retired him at Halloween Havoc 1994 because Flair pestered him. The real reason was that when Hogan wrestled his friend Brutus Beefcake at Starrcade 1994 the buyrate wasn't as good as when he wrestled Flair at Bash at the Beach and Halloween Havoc.
