TORCH TRIVIA 1/26: Answer to which wrestler did not wrestle twice during the 1999 Royal Rumble PPV Jan 27, 2009 - 1:25:23 AM
Original question: At the Royal Rumble PPV ten years ago on Jan. 24, 1999, there were a few men who wrestled on the undercard and also were entrants in the Royal Rumble match in the main event, unlike this year's Rumble from last night where no one worked double duty. Of the following, who did NOT wrestle twice on the 1999 Rumble PPV card?
(a) Val Venis
(b) X-Pac
(c) Gangrel
(d) Ken Shamrock
The answer is (a) Val Venis. Venis made a run-in during the Ken Shamrock vs. Billy Gunn match to assist Gunn, but he was not in a scheduled match. His interference didn't help Gunn either, as Shamrock eventually won the match. X-Pac vs. Gangrel was another undercard match, with X-Pac scoring the win in just under six minutes. All of these men were subsequently involved in the Royal Rumble match itself.
The Rumble PPV was generally viewed as a thumbs-down event outside of the epic and now-viewed as ridiculously stupid Mick Foley vs. The Rock "I Quit" match that led to Foley taking a sick number of chairshots to the head. The Rumble match featured Steve Austin and Vince McMahon hiding out of the ring before returning as the final two, with McMahon eventually winning the deal.
Let's check with Torch leader Dusty Robinson on some context to the 1999 Rumble: "In my mind, this was the worst Royal Rumble of all-time. Except for Austin and Vince, there was a lack of star power. The order was predictable - all the mid-carders came in first and bigger stars like members of the corporation and DX came in almost at the end. The wrestler who was in the longest was the Big Boss Man, who was in there for almost 19 minutes.
