TORCH TRIVIA 1/24: Answer to who the referee was for Harts vs. Quebecers at the '94 Royal Rumble Jan 25, 2009 - 2:16:27 AM
Original question: The 1994 Royal Rumble PPV was universally panned as a poor event, called "one of the more bizarre nights of professional wrestling in history" in the Torch Newsletter. On the undercard, Bret & Owen Hart lost to the Quebecers in a WWE tag title match when the referee stopped the match due to a storyline leg injury for Bret to set up one of Owen's classic temper tantrums. Who was the referee that stopped the match?
(a) Earl Hebner
(b) Joey Marella
(c) Tim White
(d) Mike Chioda
The answer is (c) Tim White. Unfortunately, Tim was recently sent to "future endeavors," but he was the fifth man in the ring for this undercard tag title bout that featured a curious ref-stoppage when Bret complained of an injured leg. It was part of the Owen temper-tantrum storyline that led to their epic singles match to open WrestleMania X a few months later.
Torch expert Dusty Robinson takes us before and after the Rumble event for some background check on this program: "The seeds of the Bret vs. Owen feud had been planted at the 1993 Survivor Series when the Harts (Bret, Owen, Bruce, and Keith) wrestled Shawn Michaels and the Three Knights. Owen was the only one eliminated from his team when he accidentally ran into Bret. They patched things up over the holidays which led to the Rumble tag match where Owen kicked Bret's bad leg after the match because Owen was mad because Bret didn't tag him in. This led to their opening match at WrestleMania X in what was the greatest opening match of WrestleMania history.
