TORCH TRIVIA 12/18: Answer to who was the subject of a Christmas song on a December 1996 edition of WWE Raw Dec 18, 2008 - 3:05:01 PM
Original question: Two nights ago on ECW TV, Mark Henry serenaded the WWE audience with a Christmas carol describing his imminent destruction of Hornswoggle. On the Dec. 16, 1996 edition of WWF Raw, one prominent main eventer began the tradition with a church choir taking "Oh Christmas Tree" and adapting it to the wrestler's name. Which wrestler had his very own Christmas song sung about him?
The answer is (b) Psycho Sid. Sid was the WWF champion at the time and in the midst of a feud against Shawn Michaels. The Dec. 16 Raw came one night after Sid successfully retained the WWF Title against Bret Hart at the In Your House "It's Time" PPV. Sid then continued the feud against Michaels into 1997.
So what was the deal with a church choir singing a Christmas song about Sid?
Torch reader BennyBoy checks in: I have some old tapes from Raw around that time and I'm pretty sure I remember the cheesy adaptation, complete with a cutout of Sid's head acting as the "bouncing ball" that led the onscreen words. All I remember is "Oh Psycho Sid, Oh Psycho Sid....etc".
Sadly, video of this is not available on youtube to re-create the magic. If anyone does find a clip, though, be sure to email me at jctorch@gmail.com for a follow-up on today's trivia.
-- Checking on the responses, our winners for the Dec. 18 Torch Trivia question were Sam Robinson (four in a row!) via email, and on the free site reader comments, our winners were Duenas (three in a row!), BennyBoy, Bob Snyder, Dusty Robinson (eight in a row!), Jae Wiggz (two in a row!), and Brad. I'll be publishing a leaderboard at the end of this week to recap the first two weeks of Torch Trivia.
Torch VIP members could have looked up the answer in the Torch VIP Appendix by searching the 1996 Torch back-issue section. Over 1,000 TV reports, Newswires, and columns are available for VIP subscribers.
Be sure to check back tomorrow morning for another installment of Torch Trivia.
