-- 7/12 WWE Raw Reax
Blake Reilly, Frontier Ramper (8.5): Best: Orton's RKO on Bourne. Worst: The Brady Bunch. First, let me say, I enjoyed most of last night's show. Edge-Orton was really good and Orton's RKO on Bourne was absolutely sick. Cena vs. Nexus was great for what it was. I really like how they are presenting Sheamus. I actually think him as champion right now makes me sense than the last time. Some people might be wondering why Yoshi got air time, but I want him to have more airtime. It would be great to see Yoshi/Bourne/Morrison vs. Nexus on Raw next week. ... If the only reason that Alicia Fox has the belt is because they're waiting for Melina to come back and win the belt by surprise, then I have no problem with that. Otherwise, put the belt back on Eve. It was good to see John Morrison and Ted DiBiase get a proper feud, even if it's just because Maryse is involved. I hope this isn't a throwaway after the MITB match. I honestly don't care that Mark Henry is in the MITB match, but it was awesome (pun intended) to see Miz build his refined heel character at Henry's expense. Finally, let me address the Brady Bunch stuff. If this is the end of the guest host concept, I couldn't be happier. I wasn't sure what was sadder - that eight-man tag, or the fact that the production team spent time and effort to make that Brady Bunch parody video with song included.
A.A. Norman of Tulsa, Okla.: I have to say the Shooting StaRKO was the best highlight on Raw that I've seen in a long time. I would have expected it with Evan Bourne, who sells better than anyone on the roster, but Randy Orton? He really has developed into a top star WWE has been hoping for. Congrats to them both.
Richard H. of Wilmington, Ohio: Raw was so uneven last night they should have passed out seasickness pills. How about a 7.0 for the good stuff (co-main events and continuing the Nexus Invasion) and a negative 2 for the rest of the crap they aired. Seriously, can WWE kill the guest host concept once and for all? Overall, it was a reasonably entertaining show brought down by a "comedy" match, inconsistent motivations, and some horrible matches. The Divas division is treading in deep water and might sink any show now. "Pros" are walking around backstage solo knowing that a "pack of blood thirsty hyenas" are prowling around just looking to pounce on someone. The World champion goes from bully to coward to gloat to coward, only to come out at the end of the show and save his greatest enemy? Even TNA has shown more consistency.
John of Cocoa Beach, Fla. (5.5): Best Match: Orton vs. Edge. Worst Match: Brady Bunch tag. Welcome to Raw is Brady. Tonight, does Johnny Bravo get his title shot? Will Cousin Oliver and Hornswoggle join forces? Will Davy Jones accept Marcia's wedding proposal? For a show that was supposed to lead into a pay-per-view, WWE really screwed up. They did a few good things, but there were letdowns in other places. Ted DiBiase and Maryse's promo reminded me of a beer commercial. Ted was the arrogant bachelor placing his lady below a material item, the Money in the Bank briefcase. I know John Morrison is trying be California cool and laid back in his promos, but where's the fire? And his comments to Maryse seemed to harken back to the Dirt Sheet days. ... Michael Cole is getting Vickie Guerrero heat when he "asks for your attention" when a new message comes in from the Anonymous GM. A Roddy Piper tease this week. Next week, it'll be Sgt. Slaughter telling us to "pay attention you maggots!" ... Edge had a great heel promo basically mocking Randy Orton's "voices in my head." They had a nice ending to the Edge vs. Orton match with Chris Jericho and Evan Bourne getting involved to reinforce that Money in the Bank is everyone for himself. ... Some other thoughts. Nexus furthered their gangland style attacks by jumping Yoshi Tatsu, among others.
You can't blame The Miz for his attack on Mark Henry. After all, LeBron James left his hometown, so Miz was in a bad mood for a few days. But, I do like the coldblooded approach to his character. I thought it was a letdown that Mark Henry is scheduled to be the eighth MITB participant. Finally, what gives with the Nexus's t-shirts? They looked like a hockey logo for a minor league team. But, the ending with Nexus threatening Sheamus, and then the champ clearing the ring to "save" John Cena was booked well, with the idea that Sheamus alone will beat Cena, he doesn't want or need Nexus help. My gut feeling is the Nexus will be hiding under the cage and will attack both Cena and Sheamus on Sunday and will further the feud between the Raw stars and the Nexus.
