-- 12/7 WWE Raw Reax
John of Cocoa Beach, Fla., writer. (5.0): Best match: Kofi-Orton. Worst match: DX shill sales pitch. There were times Raw from Dallas was great. And considering the location, during the times it was so bad, I wish I had a DVD of some old World Class Championship Wrestling matches. Mark Cuban was easily the most animated of the guest hosts. He was kind of the antithesis of Jesse Ventura. Cuban was straight-up for the faces and Ventura leaned towards the heels. I wish WWE would package Primo and Evan Bourne into a 2009-10 version of the old school AWA tag team of the High Flyers and move them to Smackdown to feud with the Hart Dynasty. Related to Sheamus and Mark Cuban, the Dallas Morning News sports page should have headlined, "Celtics beat Mavericks again." Give Cuban credit for taking the table shot, which I'm sure pleased NBA Commissioner David Stern and the league's referees. Best sign of the night from the Sign Guy: "Tiger Texted Melina too!" I predict a Maryse win over Melina and I'm still thinking there will be a Gail Kim heel turn on Melina. How about an Eve Torres and Maryse feud? Meanwhile, MVP has fallen faster than Tiger Woods's marketability; how about an MVP turn on Mark Henry and bring in Tony Atlas as his manager? At least that would get Atlas off of the horrible Abraham Washington show. I'm not sure if Vince McMahon is still looking for a female ring announcer who can sing, but he should leave Justin Roberts on Raw and Tony Chimel can handle Smackdown and ECW. We now have the pleasure of Chris Masters as a face. The pec bounce gives him a little sizzle to his boring Masterpiece character. And he needs to develop a new finisher. His Masterlock gives me bad flashbacks to Billy Jack Haynes. Shame on WWE for no mention of the passing of Umaga. Thank you, Carlito and also to Chris Jericho for wearing black armbands, which I'm sure was to pay tribute to the late Samoan Bulldozer. This will again give WWE bad publicity and produce debates on whether the travel and bumps are too much. And it will be forgotten until the next under-40 star dies prematurely. Final note: the way Triple H and HBK plug WWE Shopzone each week must make Billy Mays turn in his grave.
Adam of Edmonton, Alb. (2.0): Best match: Randy Orton vs. Kofi Kingston. Worst match: Every other match. When I read the Reader Reax this week, I was drawn in by one of the headlines. Paul Lucas stated that he was blown away with the amount of negativity towards Raw this week. I’m sorry, Paul, but these frustrations, much like Rome, were not thrown together in a day. I think I can speak for a lot of other wrestling (not "sports-entertainment") fans in saying that I'm sick of a lot of crap coming from WWE on Monday Nights this year. I'm sick of the short match times on Raw. I don’t know how I'm supposed to emotionally get involved in Miz's title reign when his matches are less than three minutes long. When superstars are built up one week, and jobbed the next, it's hard for fans to get behind them. I'm sick of the WWE not taking its women's division seriously. WWE does nothing to really distinguish Diva "A" from Diva "B." They don’t give me a reason to care. I've noticed more lately that WWE likes to take commercials during their Divas matches. Mickie-Beth-Natalya got seven minutes on Smackdown and over half of that was spent on commercial time. Groan. I'm sick of stupid gimmicks being an excuse for proper, strong character development. Good characters like Chris Jericho, C.M. Punk, Jeff Hardy, and guys like that are reasons people care about WWE. I'm also sick of the guest hosts. The guest host experiment has run its course, but I understand why WWE is continuing with it. I'm sick of stupid comedy. DX is funny sometimes and I can handle the Christmas commercial type promo better than them doing that crap in the ring for 20-25 minutes with Triple H hijacking Raw. But let's be honest. I don't think anyone thinks these 40-something year olds are cool over the age of 12. You know what I watch wrestling for? In. Ring. Wrestling. That being said, the only good things to come from Raw this week was Orton vs. Kingston, which is the one feud the WWE is executing very well and I hope its not overshadowed by the guest host again. The announcers spent more time focusing on Mark Cuban than Kofi Kingston being on Orton's level and that really bugged me. Another good thing was Sheamus's push. Honestly, I'm more uncomfortable with seeing Cena in the match instead of Sheamus. No offense to Cena, but he's main-evented a billion PPVs and we know he’s going to win. So I’ll save my $40. And the last good thing was Chris Jericho. All in all, I'm sick of episodes sucking. And once again, I don't see any change coming. Impact on Jan. 4? I’ll be there, brother.
