Terrie Neilson of Las Vegas, Nev. (5.0): Best: Michaels vs. Triple H vs. Cena. Worst: divas match (though it wasn't really bad). This PPV would have been so much better if the build-up wasn't so bad going in. The 5.0 is for the build-up being so weak that all the matches had to exceed expectations just to break even. The results of the Survivor Series matches fell about right, with the captains of both winning and losing teams ending strong. One of the highlights was the amusing Team Kofi promo with Christian pointing out the sore-thumb difference between himself and the rest of the tem. It was even better when it was more than the obvious things he could point out (being ECW and Canadian). Team Orton had good points for Randy to call out, though no one pointed out Randy not being champ either. Weird. During the match, the early Mark Henry elimination and the heels constantly cornering MVP were interesting and nice touches. If the rumors about Rey's health are true, then the match was booked perfectly to fit Batista looking like a vicious beast and buying R&R time for Rey. But then it makes the build-up look faulty going in with Batista a standard monster heel with an ego streak vs. being genuinely pissed off. The surreal thing was hearing Batista being cheered on to destroy Rey. The Jericho-Show-Undertaker match missed a big thing that needed explaining: how the title belt made its way back to Taker after Jericho snatched it on Smackdown. During the match, there was some awkwardness on commentary about making sure that Taker was in the ring to get pinned. Grisham corrected Striker about the "every man for himself" aspect of the three-way. The divas match served its purpose and didn't overstay its welcome. I personally would have gone farther than Shawn superkicking Triple H right out of the gate (as well as telegraphing it by not giving the DX overhead gesture). As much as they are a team, "every man for himself" has been drilled into the equation from the start. So why didn't Shawn and Triple H come out to their own respective themes? I don't think we need to get into why there wasn't a pre-match video package, and sure, Cena's challengers wanted the gold, but why? It was never deeply explained, which was a side effect of the crappy build. It will be interesting to see if and how an HBK-Hunter feud comes of this when everything between them was fairly equal. An odd question to think about the regarding the double-pin nearfall: had Hunter not lifted both shoulders and the ref counted three, who would have won? It was one of many interesting spots that made this match fun, but it wasn't enough to overcome the horrible build-up going in.
David Miller of Terre Haute, Ind. (8.5): Best match: Cena vs. Triple H vs. Michaels. Worst match: Undertaker vs. Jericho vs. Big Show. Strong effort for the last big PPV of the year from WWE. It's nice to see that Shelton Benjamin is still employed, seeing how he's one of the best talents in WWE right now. Will somebody please push this guy? I would have liked to have seen Lawler try to get some revenge on Sheamus, but maybe that will come later. Batista vs. Mysterio was what it should have been, which is to say Mysterio getting annihilated by the much larger Batista. Team Orton vs. Team Kofi was off the charts hot. Christian hitting the Killswitch on Orton, and Kofi getting the pin got two of the biggest pops of the night. It was nice to see Kofi elevated in such a manner. Undertaker vs. Jericho vs. Big Show was just predictable and boring. Taker's getting older while Show is getting fatter and Jericho is stuck in this mess. The ladies put on a good show, but I hate seeing Gail Kim not being treated like a top star. The eliminations were a bit quick for my taste, but it had a good ending. Melina's finisher is just awesome and it fits her well. Michaels superkicking Triple H to open the main event and Cena's subsequent reaction was worth the price of the PPV. Too bad the announcers assumed Cena had no chance in this match because that automatically gave him away as the winner. Lots of boos for Cena. I think the crowd, along with myself, would have rather seen one of DX win the belt, then possibly feud over it. Still, it was a fantastic match with lots of drama and a good ending. I recommend this PPV based on the main event alone. It will be interesting to see how they follow it up on Raw.
