TNA Genesis PPV Reax #2: "I kinda feel bad for Jeff Jarrett..." Jan 12, 2009 - 11:24:17 AM
Damian Hospital of Coral Springs, Florida (3.0): Best match: Angle-Jarrett. Worst match: Tag team title match or Women's match. I hope no one actually spent money on this PPV. I kinda feel bad for Jeff Jarrett - he tries hard, but this show was horrible. The matches had no psychology, there was too much blood, and it seemed like a spot-fest. The backstage segments and angles were a retro-rewind, throw in Mike Tenay's bad announcing, and I thought I was watching WCW Nitro. I'm trying to get into TNA, but I am having problems with their wrestlers being invulnerable, in addition to the "entertainment" portions. That had to be one of the worst main event marquee match-ups. Can you imagine if WWE ran Booker T, Scott Steiner, and Billy Gunn vs. Mick Foley, D-Von Dudley, and A.J. as a PPV main event? What's up with Kevin Nash no-showing? At least get a shock replacement. Kip is so done. Everything seems like chaos - the gimmicks, rules, and everyone in the ring. Matches are too confusing and chaotic (the tag match), and the illusion in pro wrestling is shattered with poor internal continuity.
Brian J. Adkins of King, N.C. (6.0) Best Match: (tie) Angle vs. Jarrett and Sabin vs. Shelley. Worst match: The six-women tag match. I wanted to give it a higher score because I was there live and it was a very vocal and passionate crowd, but looking at it in an overall perspective, it failed in a couple of ways. The no-shows were one failure, even though the sudden injuries were out of their control. Sabin and Shelley was a great match, however there was a sequence in the opening minutes where they were running back and forth along with what were supposed to be counters that was completely pointless. Sabin-Sewell was okay as comedic filler. The six women/Knockouts match was disappointing and it took a lot of effort for ODB and Roxxi to get the crowd behind them. But most fans were happy ODB won. The triple threat tag match was good in getting everyone some face time. Matt Morgan should be both commended and reprimanded for jumping off the top rope. Such a risky move for a big guy and if he had been hurt, it wouldn't be remembered tomorrow. I disagree with Keller that this was not Jarrett's crowd. Maybe it didn't come across on TV, but just as the crowd was split between Sabin and Shelley chants, they were just as split with "Let's go Jarrett" and "Let's go Angle" chants. Although, yes, they sang the "Na, na, goodbye" song after Kurt injured him after the match. Angle did get a minor heel reaction when he would not use a chair when the crowd cheered for it and he flipped them off. Jarrett should not try those high-flying moves; he almost broke his neck trying to fly over the top rope to the floor. Give credit to Steiner for jobbing to Foley in the main event, as I think everyone assumed it would be Kip.
