TNA Impact Reax #1: "I watched last night for the first time, and I have to say that this promotion is terrible." Jul 25, 2008 - 1:06:49 PM
Adam Riemer of New York, N.Y. (2.0): Best Match: The Fact That Kaz is leaving this terrible promotion. Worst: The acting/booking/me deciding to watch for the first time. I never watch Impact, not just because I am a WWE guy, but because I am usually not interested in Thursday night wrestling since great TV shows like "The Office" and "30 Rock" are on. I watched last night for the first time, and I have to say that this promotion is terrible. The acting is disgusting, I mean the "Beautiful People" match vs. the champ (whatever her name is, I didn't pay too much attention to it) was just awful. A prime reason why TNA will never be even close to even a Shotgun Saturday Night. Booker T? Booker is the stalest thing in wrestling. I was sick to death of him in WCW, I hated him in WWF/E, I was actually happy Triple H pulled the power move and never let the guy go over him. It is a shame that Christian, Samoa Joe, and A.J. Styles are not in WWE; Kaz, too. Let's see, Angle and Team 3D are stale, too; no one cares about them anymore. Kurt Angle made the right choice for his health leaving WWE, but it was career suicide. There is no way on earth this promotion will ever be close to what the WWE offers. The tag matches were awful, the Motor City Machine Guns vs. Beer Money just seemed so scripted. Alex Shelly's promo before hand was lame about Detroit and the "313." Way to copy Rey Mysterio and the "619" area code reference. 313 was relevant when Eminem was rapping about it, not now in 2008 when no one cares. Sting needs to retire. I can't believe they are still using a gimmick that is from a '90s movie. How old is this guy? Jerry Lawler is wrong when he says there is no age limit for wrestlers - there is, it's called when you have been around for 500 years and use the same act you are lame. Christian and Styles are wasted in that garbage match with Angle and the Dudleys, Abyss is now copying Kane's tormented confused soul act and "Karen's Angle," well that was just about the most pathetic piece of trash I have ever seen. I never thought I would say this, but I am happy the WWE is what it is right now, I am happy that Triple H allegedly keeps guys like Angle and Booker from being anything more than flavors of the month, and I am happy that there is a low standard of professional wrestling called TNA, that way the WWE can always be superior.
Terrie Neilson of Las Vegas, Nev. (5.0): Best: Christian/Rhino/Styles promo Worst: Rampant stupidity. TNA wants so bad to portray itself as different than WWE, but then turns right around and out-WWEs itself. Matt Morgan and Kaz both talk of WWE being a political nightmare, yet here is Morgan channeling Undertaker through the vast majority of his match. Kane won the ECW belt in about eight seconds and Punk in about the same; Taylor Wilde gets two falls in 25 seconds, the first in five. Daivari gave a very similar promo to Muhammad Hassan when he explained himself to the WWE crowd. And if you listen really closely to Booker's theme, pieces of his WWE theme are in there to be heard. "Karen's Angle" to Kaz is nothing more than what Tenay did for Sting some weeks ago. There were some bright spots, though. The opening promo between Booker and Jow was good. When Taylor and Velvet finally had something that resembled a match, it was fine. The video segments (Sting, Kaz) were nicely put together, with narration to continue the storylines, Sonjay Dutt did follow up on the fact that the replay was a key issue in the Jay-Val-Sonjay triangle. But if Val so anti-violent, why would she even be there in TNA? Makes her look really stupid. Christian and Rhino did well to try and play off of Sting's "turn." But the turn is happening by proxy, a really stupid way to go. I didn't buy it for a minute that Sting showed up when Booker was wearing a long robe to the ring and could easily have hidden a bat in it. With no explanation stil given, Mike Tenay looks stupid for continuing to demand one. The illusion of Sting turning heel is absolutely ridiculous!
Dan Strauss of Goodhue, Minn. (8.5): Best: Six-man tables match. Worst: More whipping by Beer Money. I'm so sick of seeing Beer Money whip people. Table match was pretty good for a non-PPV table match and will prolong feuds. Samoa Joe needs to stop dressing like a funeral director. In my 23 years of life I have never gotten excited for nor enjoyed contract signings. Most matches are made via verbal exchange, why do some need contracts? Now that I'm over that, the dialog between Joe and Booker is getting a lot better and their exchange of words was great. Not sure what the rest of the viewing audience thought about the ending, but I thought it was intriguing, and a cliffhanger for next week. I really enjoyed this show. TNA puts on such better, longer, quality, and athletic matches than WWE, they need to take that ball and run with it. Viewers come on sites like this one and demand more quality wrestling. One brand hasn't managed to do that yet; can TNA keep up a good thing and give wrestling fans the wrestling that they want?
