In Brief: The Bushwhackers’s Mattel figures from 2010 have becoming a surprising favorite of collectors.

Action Figure Spotlight #67: The Bushwhackers

Some of wrestling’s most legendary teams still aren’t in the WWE Hall of Fame: Demolition, the Fabulous Freebirds, the Steiner Brothers, and the Rock and Roll Express, among others. And yet on Monday, WWE announced that the Bushwhackers, a mid-card comedy act if there ever was one, would join the company’s Hall of Fame in 2015. Maybe former flag-bearer Johnny Ace will be there to induct them.

In 1988, Luke Williams and Butch Miller, the once violent Sheepherders, debuted in the WWF as the zany Bushwhackers. Since then they have appeared in action figure sets from Hasbro, Jakks Pacific, and Mattel.

Luke and Butch were scheduled to be a part of the LJN WWF Wrestling Superstars toy line in 1989. However, that toy line of figures was canceled prior to their release. It is unclear whether LJN ever went as far as to create prototypes for the figures, as they weren’t featured in any advertising and none have surfaced since then.

The Bushwhackers made their action figure debut in 1991 as a part of the first tag team series in Hasbro’s WWF toy line. The Bushwhackers were first released on a blue card, and then re-released on special Summer Slam packaging. These figures feature Luke and Butch in black tops and grey camouflage pants. They’re very easy to find loose, usually selling for under $10 for the pair. Finding them mint on card is a little trickier, with most sales in the $30-40 range.

In 1994 Hasbro released repaints of the Bushwhackers as part of the 10th series of WWF figures. These figures were sold individually on dark blue cards, and featured the Bushwhackers in green camo pants and also included removable hats. These figures are tougher to find that the originals, especially with their hats. Each figure usually sells for $25-30 mint on card, with a loose pair usually commanding about $30-40.

Jakks included the Bushwhackers in its Classic WWE Superstars line in the mid-2000s. Luke and Butch were sold in two-packs exclusively at Toys R Us, and came with such items as hats, fries, burgers, and a shake. These can be found pretty easily today for about $15 loose or $30 packaged.

Mattel also produced Toys R Us exclusive figures of the Bushwhackers in 2010. They were included in the first series of WWE Legends tag teams, and to date are the only Mattel figures of Luke and Butch. These figures were very easy to find at the time of their release, and sat on Toys R Us shelves for about $25 for over a year.

But since then, the supply of these figures has dried up, and they’ve become surprisingly popular. A mint on-card two pack usually sells in the $60-70 range, with loose figures going for about $25 each.

New WWE Cards

Topps released its latest wrestling card product, 2015 Topps WWE, a couple weeks ago. Sales of the new product have been powered by hot autographs of Paige, Bret Hart, Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, A.J. Lee, and others, along with some really cool memorabilia cards.

But, a new wrinkle emerged last week when Topps announced that special cards of Sting, including autographs and relics, would be inserted into Topps packs and boxes sold exclusively at Walmart. Sting’s first WWE autograph has been white-hot, but at the time this column was published, there were no completed auctions on eBay.

By the end of the week, there should be enough completed listings to really understand collectors’s interest in all of the new Topps cards, including those of Sting. A review of the new product will be included in the Feb. 27 PWTorch Collectibles Column.
