In Brief: Sting has been a favorite with kids and action figure collectors since 1990.

Action Figure Spotlight #54: Five Figures of Sting

Sting has been one of the most colorful characters in all of wrestling for decades, and his action figures reflect that. Sting’s long-awaited appearance in a WWE ring will probably lead to a surge in fans and collectors chasing those figures.

From Sting’s first action figure in 1990 to his upcoming WWE figure debut from Mattel, there are plenty to choose from. Here’s a look at five historically significant figures of Sting from the last 20-plus years.

(1) 1990 Galoob WCW Series 1. Sting became a main event player in 1988, but it would be another two years before WCW got its first toy line. As noted in Action Figure Spotlight #32 in June 2012, Galoob’s first series of WCW figures had two Sting toys, one in blue tights and another in orange.

These solid rubber figures were similar to LJN’s WWF Wrestling Superstars 1980s toy line, but slightly smaller. There is no real value difference between the orange and blue tights. Loose figures usually sell for $8-10, and mint-on-card figures usually run in the $30-40 range.

(2) 1991 Galoob WCW U.K. Exclusive. If you like the vintage look and feel of the WCW figures from Galoob, but want something scarcer and more valuable of Sting, this is as good as it gets. This figure is part of an incredibly rare set that was released only in the UK in 1991. It is completely different from his Series 1 U.S. counterpart, in that Sting is wearing a pre-match robe.

Loose figures can be relatively easy to find and usually sell in the $30-60 range, depending on condition. A mint-on-card figure will provide much more of a challenge and a lot more money; the only packaged Galoob WCW UK Exclusive Sting figure listed on eBay during the last 90 days sold for $406 in October.

(3) 2001 Toy Biz Evolution of Sting Box Set. Sting had plenty of WCW action figures over the years from companies like OSFTM and Toy Biz, none of which was particularly well received. Of all of Sting’s WCW figures, this intriguing set is probably the most popular. This six-pack of Sting toys was released just prior to the WWF’s purchase of WCW and then marked down to as little as $10 at discount stores in 2001.

Each figure captures a different one of Sting’s looks, from his early days in Jim Crockett Promotions to the familiar Crow-style Sting in WCW. It also includes a rare red and black figure of Sting from his days with the NWO Wolfpac. Box sets can usually be found online today for $50 or so.

(4) 2010 Jakks Pacific TNA Deluxe Impact Series 1. Jakks Pacific produced Classic WWE Superstars toys from 2004 through 2009 without ever including a single Sting figure. Collectors had to wait until 2010 for the first modern era Sting action figure. That’s when Jakks released its TNA line of figures and included Sting in the first series of Deluxe Impact.

Jakks went on to make several more Sting toys, but this very basic figure of Sting in his Crow-inspired makeup and black and red wrestling gear might be the best. Recent sales for both loose and mint-on-card figures have been in the $15-$25 range.

(5) 2015 Mattel WWE. Mattel got fans buzzing over the summer with preview images of the first WWE figure of Sting. Mattel hasn’t revealed many specifics, but it’s probably safe to say there will be several basic and Elite Sting toys. The preview images showed a flashback figure of Sting during his hottest period as the Crow Sting fighting the NWO.
