Live Instant Reaction - WWE Survivor Series PPV
By Ben Tucker, PWTorch TV specialist

Overall Score - 7.0

The 2014 Survivor Series was as bi-polar as a wrestling show can be. The first two hours of the broadcast were paced like a Monday Night Raw broadcast, delivering solid matches mixed with fluff and hype for next month's PPV. Once the third hour rolled around, though, things changed. The 45-minute-long main event delivered some of the best drama seen in a WWE ring in years. Was it convoluted? Sure. Overbooked? Definitely. Tonight proved that there is a place for that in wrestling when done well. Stars were made, stories were progressed, and WWE gained a huge amount of buzz. Sounds like a win to me.

Of course, I'm going to be incredibly biased for this show. Sting was a gigantic part of my childhood; seeing him finally enter a WWF/E ring for the first time in history was one of the most surreal moments I have ever witnessed. The execution was flawless, the timing was perfect, the crowd was ready, and the moment delivered. Right off the bat, the main event of Survivor Series gave an unforgettable moment that finally, once and for all, closes the door on the saga known as WCW. Sting, the flagbearer of the company for over a decade, finally entered a WWE ring. This was Captain Kirk fighting with Obi Wan Kenobi. This was Master Chief gunning down Hades with Kratos. The magnitude of the final moments of this broadcast were unbelievably immense, and WWE knocked it right out of the park.

Of course, one moment did not make this entire match. Dolph Ziggler (with the proper follow-up) was made into a legitimate main event star tonight, eliminating 80 percent of the opposing team after taking a brutal and entertaining beating. He completely stole the show (no pun intended) from the rest of his team, especially the Big Show, whose heel turn provided the biggest flaw in the match. The man has swapped between being face and heel nearly every year of his career since debuting in the WWF. After his first appearance for the company as a heel in February 1999, Big Show turned face just one month later. He would continue to switch between face and heel in the years of 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2012, 2013 ,and now 2014. Who could possibly trust this man at this point?

Big Show excluded, the main event was the star of the show, delivering a great story with a fantastic payoff. The rest of the broadcast, though, felt closer to the 1991 Survivor Series, an event notable for being presented like an ad for the "This Tuesday in Texas" event nine days later. The women's matches largely under delivered; the championship match completely threw away the story being told about the Bella Twins, making their three months of agonizing storytelling worthless, and the female Survivor Series match felt painfully long due to most of the women giving the audience no reason to cheer for them.

The men fared slightly better, with an entertaining yet forgettable Tag Title match (highlighted by the antics of Damien Mizdow) and a very nice contest between Dean Ambrose and Bray Wyatt that sadly had to turn into a blatant advertisement for next month's TLC. Finish your lunch before moving on to dinner, dear.

Survivor Series 2014 was a one-match show. View the final hour of the event, but don't bother with anything more. This pay-per-view will be remembered for Sting and the potential rise of Dolph Ziggler. While the show largely came across like a middling Raw, what was good will be remembered for years to come.

And if that won't impress you, maybe Roman Reigns talking about his fist "raining" will.
