In Brief: Collectors are showing renewed interest in Ryback’s trading cards since his return to WWE TV.

Card Show #49: Ryback 2013 Topps WWE Autograph

If sales of Ryback’s collectibles were plotted on a line graph, it would literally look like a roller coaster. The former Skip Sheffield rose from obscurity to superstar in 2012, came crashing down after a heel turn in 2013 and bottomed out after forming an unsuccessful tag team with Curtis Axel.

But, after Ryback’s reintroduction on WWE TV in late October, interest in his collectibles is climbing again. When Ryback returned to TV to squash Bo Dallas on October 27, fans reacted like it was October 2012 instead of October 2014. They picked right up with the “Feed Me More” chants as if the mistake that was Rybaxel never happened.

The return of the no-nonsense babyface Ryback has resulted in renewed interest in his trading cards, specifically his lone certified autograph from Topps. Ryback’s only autographed trading card was included in the 2013 Topps WWE product, which was released during the tail end of Ryback’s babyface push in March of 2013.

When 2013 Topps WWE was first released, Ryback’s autograph was regularly selling for about $50. It remained relatively hot even after his heel turn and feuds with John Cena and C.M. Punk. But once Ryback was positioned as little more than a jobber to the stars with Curtis Axel, the value plummeted. As recently as September, Ryback’s 2013 Topps WWE Autograph sold for as little as $8. That changed almost instantly after Ryback returned to Raw on October 27. That same night, one eBay listing ended at $39.95.

While one sale doesn’t indicate a trend, it’s important to note that sellers have realized the upswing in interest in Ryback’s signature and have adjusted their prices accordingly. All eBay listings for this card now have a But it Now of about $40. Sellers have either adjusted their prices or removed their listings from other sites as well.

Whether Ryback’s 2013 Topps WWE Autograph holds its value depends mostly on how he is pushed. WWE looked to have a legitimate new star on their hands when they shot Ryback to the top in 2012, but fans and collectors lost interest after Ryback lost all of his pay-per-view matches and was eventually positioned as a heel and a lower mid-carder.

Collectibles Column Note

The PWTorch Collectibles Column Card Show feature will take a break after next week’s column, which will mark the 50th installment of Card Show. The popular Action Figure Spotlight feature, which ran regularly throughout 2011 and 2012, will return on November 18. If there is a particular wrestling figure you would like to see included in an upcoming Action Figure Spotlight, send me an email or a tweet.
