In Brief: Mattel whet collectors's appetites with new figures of Hogan, Sting, and more.

If you’re a collector of wrestling action figures, you’d better start saving your money.
At last week’s big Comic Con in San Diego, Mattel unveiled dozens of new WWE toys scheduled to be released in late 2014 and into 2015. Here’s a look at 10 cool figures that will likely top collectors’s lists.

For a more complete list of figures revealed at the event, check out WWE's website and RingsideCollectibles.com, or follow @WrestlingFigs.com on Twitter.

(10) Rusev and Lana. Admittedly, Rusev is not a favorite of yours truly, and nobody in wrestling makes me want to change the channel faster. Personal feelings aside, the first Rusev and Lana figures will probably be a hit with collectors. The two figures are not packaged together and will be sold in separate series. Mattel unveiled pictures of a finished Rusev, but only an unpainted prototype of Lana.

(9) Wyatt Family Daniel Bryan. Remember that time when the most popular wrestler in the world sort of turned heel and kind of joined the Wyatt Family? It wasn’t particularly well received by fans and it didn’t last very long, but Mattel is including a Wyatt Family Daniel Bryan – “Daniel Wyatt,” as he was called at some house shows – in its Elite Series 32. The figure includes a removable cloth jumpsuit, with presumably Bryan’s regular wrestling gear underneath.

(8) Jimmy and Jey Uso Elite Figures. Mattel has already made two Uso two-packs, but Elite Series 31 marks the Elite-style debut for the current WWE tag champs. The brothers’s figures are more detailed than earlier toys and include removable shirts.

(7) “Bluetista” Batista. Poor Dave Batista. He couldn’t catch a break when he returned to WWE in 2014. He was booed out of the building after winning the Royal Rumble by fans who wanted Daniel Bryan. During his last WWE match to date, Batista showed up wearing bright blue trunks and matching boots and arm bands. Within minutes of his entrance, “Bluetista” was trending on Twitter. Mattel is producing a toy of “Bluetista,” which will compete with Jakks’s pink dress shirt Batista as Big Dave’s worst action figure.

(6) Corporate Kane. Until now, you’ve probably made due with a homemade Corporate Kane, perhaps snapping the head off of a Jakks Joey Styles figure and replacing it with Kane’s. The first official Corporate Kane figure will be a Toys R Us build-a-figure exclusive. In order to build Glenn Jacobs in his suit and tie, you’ll have to buy four special figures at $22.99 a pop and assemble him yourself. The four figures in the series are modeled after their WrestleMania 30 appearances: Undertaker, Bray Wyatt, Daniel Bryan, and John Cena.

(5) Vader. Mattel released a Vader toy back in 2011 in its WWE Legends line, but this is a much better figure. Mattel’s earlier Vader figure came with a furry white robe that Vader wore in his awful WCW mini movies. This new figure captures Vader’s classic look, with the big metal mask that he wore in Japan and during his early days in WCW.

(4) Razor Ramon & X-Pac. Scott Hall and Sean Waltman will forever be linked together thanks to the classic Razor Ramon and 1-2-3 Kid angle and their time together in the white-hot NWO. Mattel showed off its first figures of each wrestler at Comic Con. The Ramon figure is decked out in purple tights, boots, and vest. X-Pac comes with a removable t-shirt and the forgotten WWF European Championship belt. These figures will be sold individually, not in a two-pack.

3) Doink the Clown. Vince McMahon’s critics in the 1980s and ‘90s labeled the WWF a circus, so Vince responded by bringing in his own clown. While the babyface Doink is one of the most despised wrestling characters among hardcore fans, the evil Doink is incredibly popular. Mattel’s Doink comes with three removable hairstyles and has that same wicked grin on his face that Matt Borne wore so well.

(2) Sting. Collectors waited years for a good Sting figure, and Jakks Pacific delivered in 2010 with the first modern-era Sting toy. Mattel’s first Sting toy may even top that. Jakks made some pretty cool Sting toys, including the modern era Sting, “Joker” Sting, Great American Bash 1990 Sting and a vintage Sting. But Mattel’s new figure captures Sting at the hottest period in his career and arguably the peak of WCW: the “Crow” Sting who defeated Hulk Hogan for the WCW World Title at Starrcade ’97.

(1) Hulk Hogan. It’s hard to imagine a WWF/WWE toy line without Hulk Hogan, but that’s been the case for Mattel. Hogan has appeared in WWF/WWE toy lines from LJN, Hasbro, and Jakks, along with a few WCW toy lines. But because Hogan was employed by TNA when Mattel took over the WWE toy license in 2010, Mattel hasn’t made a Hogan figure – until now. Promotional images of Mattel’s Hogan toy show him with a removable Hulkamania t-shirt and headband, along with the classic WWF Championship belt that Hogan carried from 1984 to 1988.
